I noticed during the week that Elena seems to be developing fatty/pea eye. The membrane around her eye is protruding a bit at the top and looks just like the pictures I've seen on the internet.
She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort at all. I'm going to take her to the vet to confirm this is what is wrong, but I won't have enough money until this week. Have any of you ever had a pig with fatty eye before? Everything I've read says it doesn't cause any pain and that no treatment is necessary, but is that true? And does having those membranes exposed leave the eye more prone to infection or anything?
Sorry I've no pics!

Haha, just realised I put this in EAR problems and not EYE problems but I can't seem to find the option to move it, oops!

I think once a reply has been posted only Dawn can move the topic. As the option to move has gone for me also.
As for Elena, aslong as she seems to be herself i wouldnt worry, I havent had a pig with pea eye but one of my sows has cherry eye. But this comes and goes and hasnt gotten any worse.
Im not certain what causes this but treatment is usually only sought if it becomes that protruded that is covers the eye and effect eyesight.

I've an appointment for the vet for Tuesday. Our regular vet is away until then and unless it's an emergency I don't trust other vets to give them a good look over. Since I posted, Lenie's eye seems a little better. She still has the protrusion but it has gotten smaller. It looked a little inflamed at first but that has gone too. I'll update when I have a diagnosis

We were at the vet today. From the outside Lenie's eye looked completely back to normal, but under her eyelid her conjunctival membranes are very inflamed, so we've to use fucithalmic ointment on her twice a day for 10 days. I'll try to get a photo in the next few days.

We've been treating her as directed by the vet but when we pull back her eyelid her conjunctiva look the same as before we started. She has another three days of treatment to go, so hopefully it'll shrink then, but I'll ring the vet on Friday (she finishes her course on Thursday) if there's no improvement. He asked us to call and let him know how her eye was responding anyway, so he might be able to advise whether to continue treatment or bring her back in. She's in no discomfort at all, she's her normal piggy self, eating and drinking and pooping, so I'm not too worried about her

As promised, here are photos of Lenie's eye. Here is the eye from the outside (but blurry, sorry!). You can see a very small protrusion of membrane at the top eyelid (not as much as it was but more than normal). And this is when you pull the upper eyelid back. It hasn't changed much with treatment so I'm going to ring the vet tomorrow to see if we need to do anything further with it. I think it looks worse than it is, she doesn't seem to be in bad form with it. Fingers crossed she's alright.
