I recently adopted two new piggies to breed again. I haven't had any g-pigs for about 2 years now. So I was really looking forward to this and I have people lined up for the babies. But When I bought the guinea pigs I bought them from a lady who lives about 8 hr. from me, I had to quickly choose the piggies and dash off as I had other events that evening. I've gotten all my cavies from this lady in the past and she has given me nothing but beautiful show cavies so I assumed these were just as healthy and beautiful and I was slack on the checking for problems this time around. But as I was examining them fully this morning, I found a few odd things. #1.) I think the female has pea eye. She doesn't seem to act abnormally or have trouble seeing but I've heard you aren't supposed to breed g-pigs with pea eye because its hereditary. Is that true? I don't know what Ill do if it is...as I bought her with breeding in mind. #2.)The male is 2lb 11oz The female is 2lb 5oz...But they drink a lot more water than I would expect to be normal. Together they drink a full water bottle each day. The water bottle measures about 7in long. and 1&1/2 in. wide.
I am attaching a photo of her eye when "pea eye" is visible. Am I correct to diagnose this as pea eye? I've never had this problem before.

I haven't really had any encounters with Pea as such, so wouldn't be able to comment on what it looks like, although I know it is hereditary and I personally wouldn't use her to breed with.
As for the lots of drinking, I've found that some pigs do just drink a lot, my one pig Tammy drinks almost non-stop, I've had her tested for diabetes but she came back normal and she seems fine otherwise and has been drinking masses of water for ages now so I figured it's just the way she is. On the flip side some piggies hardly drink at all...

Thanks! Does anyone know if the pea eye causes any pain or other problems besides just looking ugly?

From GuineaLynx: < www.guinealynx.info/eyes.html > Pea Eye Pea eye (or fatty eye) is a permanent protrusion of the conjunctival sac, thought to be inherited. Pea eye and fatty eye are frequently grouped together by vets as conjunctival swelling. These conjunctival protrusions can be removed by laser if they are interfering with vision. Cavies with pea eye generally do not seem to be uncomfortable and treatment is usually not necessary.
