I previously posted here about my guinea pig Elena's eye. I
t looked like she was developing fatty eye/pea eye (as you can see in this picture:)
We took her to the vet just in case and he had a really good look in her eye and gave us a course of fucithalmic ointment to see if that would reduce the swelling. After ten days we saw no improvement. So then we got a course of Maxitrol (which has a steroid in it) to try, but there was still no improvement.
We went back to the vet and he was quite worried that it might be a symptom of an underlying tumour since the surrounding lymph tissue was very inflamed. We decided to take a biopsy for analysis which meant little Lenie had to get put under anaesthetic. That was really really scary, but it had to be done.
I went home, had some lunch and two hours later I had a phonecall from a very happy vet to say that he was 99% sure that he had solved Lenie's problem and there would be no need to send the tissue for pathology. While Elena was knocked out, our vet cut away almost all the growth, as well as keeping tissue for analysis. And when he had removed all that, he saw a teeny tiny stalk, no bigger than a thread, sticking out from where the growth had been. And when he pulled it, a whole grass seed came out!
If you've never seen one, they're the middle one in this pic and are about 5-8mm in length, excluding the stalk:
My poor piggy had had that stuck in there behind her eyeball for weeks! And there was no way to see it until all that excess tissue was gone! That evening Lenie was perky and back to her regular self and you'd never know that anything had been wrong with her.
It just goes to show that when you think your piggy has one thing, it could easily be another problem in disguise!
