I just went to look at some more piggys to choose one (not got one yet) and I'm not sure on a couple of things. Do all guineas have bald patches behind the ears? Grey scaly patches on the ears? I have read and read about nutrition and cage size etc for the past two weeks, also about possible illness but when its coming to looking at piggys I don't know whats dirt from an over crowded cage and possible infection (ps. I've used the search and couldn't find anything about bald patches, sorry if I'm duplicating other peoples posts!)

All piggies have bald patches behind their ears and on the inside of their legs (where their ankles would be). Sometimes the bald patches behind the ear can look a bit weird depending on the skin colour of the pig, but it shouldn't be scaly or flaky. If that's the case I would take a trip to the vet to get checked for a fungal infection and check the rest of the fur to see if there are similar patches.

As Orlaith has said all guinea pigs have bald patches behind their ears. Its a natural characteristic of guinea pigs. If you are unsure of how to pick a guinea pig, do lots of research and ask lots of questions both here and to the person or pet shop you decide to get the pigs.
Ensure you do plenty of research before making the commitment of getting the guinea pigs.
Good luck

Hey thank you both for the replies,
I've sat at this computer every spare minute for the past two weeks trying to find out what I can about my piggies. (couldn't find anything about bald patches though!)
I've been looking all over for well kept ones but I haven't been willing to pay anyone so far as I didn't agree with certian things I saw. It has been a real eye opener that's for sure.
I'm travelling for 3 hours tomorrow to buy 2 piggies that I know have lived a very happy life.
I've buit my 4 by 8 c&c cage, got my supplies and lots of toys to swap around.
I think it was easier to get ready for my 3 children ariving! oooooooo exciting!
Thanks again!
