So I just got a himi piggie(Bentley) for free of Craigslist(like gumtree) and his owner said he was gonna take him to the vet, but the vet canceled and he's bring treated for mites so he needs ibermectin. Is there anything I can get to substitute that or do I have to go to the vet?? :/ I don't have much money at the moment and SF vets are super expensive.

You can buy mite treatments which contain ivermectin from pet stores. It depends how bad the mites are and what strain he has. You must get him treated as soon as possible as mites can cause alot of damage.
If the petstore mite treatments dont work he must get vet treatment.
The pet store treatments are usually small pipettes which you apply to the pigs usually behind the ears. You must then repeat the treatment 4-6weeks later to ensure you have eliminated the problem.
Keep the pig seperate from all other pigs and clean his bedding daily. Its best to keep him on newspaper as its easy to change.

Yes mites are very contagious. They will spread via bedding. Clothing ect. There are two types of mites guinea pigs can get. It looks like he has mange mites also known as toxicara cavie (sp) if that is what he has he can pass it on to other animals and the mites will even irritate us humans. From that pigture the poor pig has had mites a while to get into that state. Its always advised to quarentine any new pigs before putting them with pigs you already have.
It looks like hes going to need more than mite spray to clear the wounds up. It makes you wonder what took his previous owner so long to realise its mites. Hes a white pig and the mites leave small black flecks through the coat.
Im glad your seeking vet advice, he sounds like hes in great hands now. You should also treat all your other guinea pigs and all cages.toys ect.
Let ua know how he gets on.

Well I bought the spray and it on him and he has a vet appointment tomorrow. I talked to his previous owner and he said that Bentley was housed with another piggie(his son) and that that piggie was totally ok.

And I don't see any black specks on him at all. Just those red flaky areas.

As Kayleigh said, I would treat all the pigs as a precaution. It will do them no harm to be treated, even if they don't have mites. A lot of breeders treat their pigs every six months or so, just to be on the safe side, as mites can spread so quickly once they get into a herd.
I hope Bentley's skin improves soon.

I find is very strange and a little insulting that vets cancel, Here in the Uk, well Scotland at least i have never had any vet cancel or reschedule. We as owners make appointments for a reason. Not just for the fun of it.
I hope Bentley gets better soon, Keep us updated with him.

Only time a vet did that to my was for a op but it was to do two ops at the same time with two vets, so both vets had to be free

Are the mites visible to the human eye??
|
|
|
Post by Kayleigh on Jul 19, 2011 17:17:01 GMT
No mites are microscopic. So cant be seen by the naked eye. If you rub the coat do any flecks, light brown or black appear? If so then thats more than likely mite faeces. Hows Bentley doing today?

Nope. No flecks. Bentley is doing ok. He's still eating and drinking. We have an appointment for him tomorrow. I'm alittle mad since I told them over the phone that he has mites and they said they might have to run tests. What tests? I need ivermectin. The end. No tests required. I'm not paying a million dollars when I know what the problem is. It's funny because I asked his previous owners and they said he was allergic to his bedding and it's not mites, but to make another appointment. I mean were they seriously trying to lie when they told us before we got him what he had?? Stupid people. -____-

And are we allowed to bathe him? When we got him he smelled bad.

Post by Kayleigh on Jul 19, 2011 20:15:26 GMT
Yes you can bathe him, ensure you use a nice soft shampoo, avoid a treated shampoo of you are using the spray on him as you dont want to overdose him. Make sure you dry him through and keep him warm.
The patches look very itchy and inflammed. It cant be pleasant.
You will be surprised what nonsense some people come up with to try and justify their actions or distinct lack of them.
Some vets may try to squeeze you out of money but if its not mites then its best you know what your dealing with.
Best of luck and let us know the outcome
