I haven't posted here in the forum in a while... these past few months have been a little crazy. Sorry guys! But I come with some questions and hope that you could help me out... Yesterday afternoon, my boyfriend texted me and told me that Major Tom was having trouble eating. He couldn't get him to eat, he seemed really depressed/lethargic. When I got home from work, I noticed that Tom didn't seem as heavy as he usually is. He had crusties around his eyes and he is poofing himself up. Also, from yesterday on I haven't really noticed any poops or pees at all and that is concerning me a lot. Earlier today, my boyfriend said that he was able to actually get Tom to eat and he started acting like himself again. He also said that Tom did release some gas and that made him feel better. But now that I've come home, he looks like he's really sick again. I don't know what to do. He's picking around at the food we've given him and we're feeding him by syringe but if he's blocked up it must not be doing any good. Please help?? I don't want to lose my buddy. I'm seriously considering selling things so I can take him to the vet!

It sounds like he could be impacted. If you have a look at his bottom area (this isnt pleasant in any way shape or form) And apply pressure around his anus it should open up a little, if hes impacted you will see a large mass of faeces, it will smell horrendous and be fairly difficult to remove as you cant just pull it.
You will need to soak him in water and gently rub at the area until the faeces comes away.
I had this issue with one of my boars and it was horrible but well worth doing. He too was lethargic and not wanting to eat much. After this he got dryed and put back and he was straight at his food bowl munching away.
Good luck

I agree with Kayleigh, it sounds like impaction. There is a thread with information here and the Guinea Lynx page is here. A lot of places recommend offering some of the poop back to your pig to eat since he won't have been eating his poops as normal and so will have been missing out on some nutrients.

Hey guys... I will try that too... we did take him to the vet and the vet said he believes he may have scurvy. We have been giving him Vitamin C drops in water and when we initially tried that yesterday, that's when he started acting like himself but then drooped back down again. Then today we took him to the vet and he gave Tom a shot of Vitamin C (50 mg) and he seemed to perk up a bit from that too. Not a ton, but just a little bit. But now he's back down to looking horrible again.

If your guinea is not eating he will need to be syringe fed. Also do u worm and bath ur guinea? My guinea boy died a few years back as I wasn't aware of this. Hope he's feelin better soon. Kez

Scurvy can often be diagnosed when theres an underlying problem. If you have been giving him vitamin c in the water then i very much doubt its scurvy. As the added vit boost would have helped him out a bit. Heres a great page about scurvy and other problems pigs come across www.guinealynx.info/scurvy.htmlDo let us know how he progress's/ Kayleigh

We tried everything we could with him... I lost my little buddy this evening. I feel so guilty because I feel like I didn't do enough to take care of him. I don't know exactly how he came down with what he had.... all I know is that I was at my Mom's for a few days and my boyfriend was "supposed" to be caring for the pigs. Major Tom always gave so much love and devotion and its going to take a while to get over losing him. I'm rambling, like usual... I'm just really upset. Thank you guys for your advice.

Sorry to hear about Major Tom. May he RIP over the rainbow bridge. You done everything you could to help him. Guinea pigs are fantastic at hiding problems and they can go down hill very quickly.
