So, after all the problems we had with Hamlet not eating, things eventually regulated themselves which we are very happy about. Of course he then started to grow a lump on his chin.
We just had him in to the vet this past week to have it checked out, and they ended up lancing it as it was an abscess.
So, now my question is simply about caring for this wound.
They gave us a run of antibiotics, which is understandable, as well as some "Wound Flush". Their advice was to flush out the wound once per day for 5 days but weren't very specific on what it is I should be flushing.
This morning I decided to flush quite vigorously inside the wound, as there was white stuff in it. Am I right in assuming this is the pus that I should be ensuring is completely removed? Along with the pus the morning some of the scabbing on the wound came off as well (I didn't have to pull at it).
I have been doing some reading to make sure I'm treating this the right way, and everything basically says to keep the wound open for as long as possible until there is no more pus developing.
The pus is pretty thick, almost like a cottage cheese, it is a little bit odorous (not a lot) and mostly just a white to off white color (very little coloration). Also, there is no blood at all in the pus, or even from the wound, even with such a vigorous flush this morning.
As I've never had to treat something like this I just want to ensure I'm doing everything correctly.
Hamlet is doing well otherwise, eating normally for the most part, although he's slowed down on his carrots, he's loving his romaine lettuce again, and eating more pellets than he ever has before.
Given that he's 4.5 going on 5 very soon he's taken all these health problems pretty well. Also, he's super cuddly right now, which is so sweet. The vet just loves having him visit cause he's so friendly.
