Hello, I have a little girl (shown as my avatar) who has been sick since we got her. We bought her in August and she had pneumonia (fluid only in one lung) and was put on a 10-day round of TMS antibiotics along with a probiotic. She seamed to get better for a couple of weeks and then it came back. She was put on another round of TMS and probiotics for 7 days with no luck. The vet then put her on a 7-day round of chloramphenical. She didn't get any better. She is extremely congested in her nose. Her lungs are clear and she is still eating. The vet put her on chlorpheniramine (an antihistamine) because she thought she might have allergies. We removed all the hay from her C&C cage. She has never had shavings and has always been on fleece bedding. We washed the fleece in All free and clear and removed every allergen there could be. The vet just put her on Lasix today and put her back on TMS and the probiotic. We are adding running a humidifier in her room as well as 1 tiny drop of little noses saline drops to the middle of her nose. The vet doesn't think that it is her heart as she is very young (5 months) and still eating and not gaining an excessive amount of weight. She is not as active as she used to be and seems to lay around alot. All this has taken place since August 11, 2011. My vet is an exotic vet and I am comfortable that she knows what she is doing. Anyone have any suggestions cause I am at my whits end with this little girl.

Does she have any fluid around her nose? Does she wheeze at all when breathing?
Has the vet had a look at the running of her nose, the shape and growth ect? As she could have been born with a nasal deformity. which would cause the difficult in breathing.
If shes eating her food, hay and veg i would keep feeding her. You could try giving her oats as they are higher in fat and are used to bulk pigs out.

Thanks for the questions and concern. She has actually perked up a bit after her second dose of antibiotics and lasix. She is eating and drinking fine. I have a wonderful exotic pet vet who calls and checks on her every day. Not to mention that we live close to Athens, Georgia and have had contact with the UGA Vet department as well. With more prayer than medicine, we are doing everything in our power to get her well. All I can do is say that she is in the Biggest, Best hands that she could be (God's).
On a side note, I wanted to get the word out about Vicks rub. My vet and the exotic pet dept at UGA said that it is never a good idea, nor a safe one, to use Vicks rub on guinea pigs. It is toxic to them. Not sure what other vets are saying, but I trust my vet.

Ahh thats something good to note about the vapour rub. Although i have done research and used the break down of the rub and found nothing toxic in it. Obviously it should not be eaten. And i have only used it to bond boars who wouldnt settle down.
Ill have to ask my vets and my old college lecturer to see what they say.
