I just got a new female piggie to put in with my neutered male who just lost his cagemate. There is a chance the female is pregnant, the pet store said she "may have" been caged with a male for awhile. My impressions are that she was in with a male until I called about her today. I asked if she had always been alone and the younger girl that was there said "oh no she's used to be with the other one". Well the only other one they had is a male. When I asked again if she had been with the male I never really got an answer. I believe she was with him and is likely pregnant.
Is it safe to keep her with the neutered male? I have them seperated right now but he's very lonely and not eating much since he lost his cagemate. He's not a dominant hedgie at all, was very submissive with his cagemate before. If she is pregnant and delivers in the cage with him, will he hurt them?
Thanks!

As you arent sure how far along she is the only thing you can do is put the two togeather and see how they get along? The boar should be ok with the sow. He can still mount her but nothing will come of this. Boars tend to be very good with youngsters so there shouldnt be a problem when she delivers.
If the sow seems stressed out at all then house her alone until the pups are a little older.
How old is the sow?

Thanks for the advice, that's what I'll do. Albert never tried to mount Fiona so I'm hoping he won't bother the new girl much. They first said she was just under a year, then they said she was about 6 months old. I really hate going to that pet store but they had the only female piggie I could find within a 5 hour drive. They did say that if she did have babies that they would gladly take them, I said I would let them know but I will keep them all before I let that store have any.

She should hopefully be ok then. Ensure she has plenty of fresh fruit/veg and access to unlmited hay. Keep feedng her a good quality pellet but dont increase the pellet food. If you can get readi grass this will be beneficial to her also.
Best of luck and do let us know how shes doing

Thank you for the help, I had noticed she didn't eat last night. I put her in with Albert and she just ran into the hide and stayed there. I put some fresh veggies in with her and some for Albert as well of course. When I put her in with him he just went and stuck his head in the hide then went to eat his veggies. I don't think he's going to bother her, he didn't even try to eat the veggies with her when he was done his.
I will keep you updated and I really appreciate all the help. This is a great board, some boards would go on about how I shouldn't have bought a piggie from a store etc but you just focus on helping.

We are all here to help advise and share out experiences with eachother. We all one time or another get a pet store pig, or breed or rescue. Aslong we do the best we can by our pets i dont see why it should matter where he/she came from. Keep us posted with your sow

Well just a quick update. Albert and the new girl, now named Bugsie, are getting along great. He hasn't tried to mount her at all actually pretty much ignored her the first while but now I saw him groom her and they are sleeping together in one hide. She's very skittish but is slowly settling down. I finally saw her outside of the hide when I was in the room with them so that was nice. Now its just a waiting game to see if she is pregnant or not. Part of me hopes she is, babies are sooo cute, but part of me hopes she isn't.
Thanks
