After seeing 3 vets (one exotic, one familiar with exotics, and one regular), I'm really peeved that no one has listened to me about Shelby's skin. He's had dandruff since I got him. Last night I noticed a tiny tuft of fur come off him held together by a clump of stuff. He doesn't seem like he scratches more than normal but his skin is really red under his white fur, not the roan fur. Me petting him never bothers him, he never acts like he's in pain so I've gone with my vets opinions that it may just be normal for him. But now I have a piggy that has scratched himself and bled a little. I've had it. Another vet appointment tomorrow night. I'm hemorrhaging money on him with vet visits. I went and bought some Bag Balm and have applied it all over him and though he hated me while I applied it, he's a happy camper now, albeit a smelly and waxy one. I'm going to be really angry if I find out tomorrow night he has mites and this wasn't caught sooner. *shaking my head* So over this.

Have they considered mites? I hope you can get it resolved. Good luck.

Oh it's mites for sure and I'll be telling the vet that.

BTW to anyone reading I HIGHLY recommend keeping Bag Balm in your GP supply kits. I applied it all over Shelby last night and 20 minutes later I had a completely different pig. He was popcorning, playing with his wood chew toys that he hasn't touched since I bought them. It's definitely a lifesaver. He is still going to the vet tonight but in the meantime while I'm at work all day it's definitely relieved my mind knowing that he'll be scratching much less. In America you can get Bag Balm at CVS and probably other drugstores but I've read in the UK you can purchase it at Wal-Mart.

Yeah last night was the first time I ever noticed sores and they look pretty fresh so I'm glad I'be caught this in the baby stages.

Yup. The diagnosis is mange mites. Two doses of Ivermectin and we should be good to go.

dogs can get mange - but I think its caused by a different species of mite. I'd watch them anyway.

Can't believe this happened to you! I know that if I have any doubts about skin problems with my pigs, I treat them for mites as a precaution. It does them no harm to get dosed for it, I can't imagine why those three vets wouldn't have given them ivermectin as a first port of call. I hope Shelby is okay

Thanks everyone. Shelby seems okay. The Bag Balm got rid of the sores, I didn't see them anymore as of this morning, just little tiny dots of where they were. He's still scratching a little. I go back in 2 weeks for his second shot of Ivermectin. My vet scared me by saying the Bag Balm could have "compromised his natural insulation" so he told me to be sure I kept him warm and said if he ingested any of it during grooming that could screw things up a bit (I didn't see much grooming in the 24 hour time period the Bag Balm was on so I'm not too concerned about that). I swear, you try to help a pet... So I washed most of it off last night, dried him with a couple towels then held him for a bit all wrapped in fleece like a baby till I felt comfortable that he was dry enough to go back in the cage, and kept a heating pad under his bedding where his hidey is all night. The vet said these guys are pretty good at regulating their own temperatures so he'll know if he needs to use the heating pad or not. I didn't sleep much and noticed he seemed to go about his normal activity throughout the night. But now I'm in tears wondering if all the stress of the vet visits and everything will affect him, if he'll get pneumonia, etc. I've never had a pet cause me so much worry, I'm surprised I'm not sick in bed.

Hey guys it's been about 24 hours since Shelby's Ivermectin injection and for the last hour or so he has been scratching pretty intensely. He's been pretty active this evening and the scratching began during this time. When he's just resting and calm there's no scratching. Is this to be expected? He's been popcorning and running around and everything. I'm assuming it can kinda be related to a sunburn, how when we move around it's more intense and painful but at rest it calms down?

Try rubbing some baby oil in? I used it when our sows developed bald patches and were scratching and they stopped immediately. Incidentally, also use it on rabbits for fur/ear mites (smothers the mites - seems to clear up faster than Ivermectin alone).

That's what the Bag Balm was for, to smother the mites. I don't have baby oil but I do have Vitamin E oil and Aloe Vera... Would either of those work?

I've read conflicting things about aloe vera. Some people swear by it and others say it makes piggies itch even worse. I know it sounds mean, but if you can at all, it might be better to just let the air at the wounds so they heal faster. E45 is a good moisturiser but it's quite thick and won't let the air in. You could put some of that on if it gets worse.

Thanks! It's been almost a week since treatment now and the sores are gone and the itching is much less. He still itches but it doesn't seem to be nearly as much as it was.
