Hi. We have two new 10 week old piggies. I noticed that Smudge had some white wiggly things which i now know to be running lice. He hasn't got many and i know they don't bite so my question is should i wait another couple of weeks until they are old enough to use the shampoo, or should i just do it now but maybe only do one shampoo and not leave it on? Any suggestions???

Ohh my!! Iv never had a pig with lice!! I would treat them. at 10 weeks they arent too young for it. Just dont over do the shampoo. You must get rid of them. They arent pleasant.

Thank you. I'm wondering if the lice came with them when i bought them? In a way i'm hoping so because then i know once i've got rid of them they're gone for good. But if they've caught them out of the hay how are you ever gonna keep on top of that? They will just keep catching them wont they??? Bought the Excel Herbage expensive hay too!!!! Do the lice stay in the fleece bedding too? Will i have to boilwash everything?

I would completely disinfect the cage - otherwise they will pick them back up. I don't know if boil wash is necessary - when my daughter had (human) headlice you could just run bedding and everything in a hot dryer for 30 minutes to kill all the eggs.

Oh, I had this exact problem before when I had a pair of girls in quarantine and I emailed Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas for her advice and she said (copied and pasted):
"Hello Orlaith,
Thank you for your email. The Lice 'n' Easy shampoo can be used on Mini-Pigs but instead of leaving the second shampoo on for 5 minutes as you do with the adults, rinse it straight off. The reason for putting 12 weeks as the minimum age is that piggies don't actually need bathing under that age unless they have a skin problem:)
I hope this helps and do let me know how you get on.
Best wishes, Chrissie"

I bathed them tonight with the lice n easy. They were so scared poor little things and i was nervous about getting it in their eyes, i'm not sure whether i've got it all over!! Only did them a one shampoo as it was a bit much for them as it was their first bath. But i lathered it up and really massaged it into their fur. I've got to do it all over again next week, but maybe i will be a bit more confident then! They seem quite happy now. They look lovely and fluffy! They are still having abit of a scratch but not as much as they were before. Hopefully thats because of the bath and not because they've still got loads of lice because of my rubbish bathing techniques!!!

Thats good, keep their cage clean, it may be worth putting them on a different bedding as im not sure how lice would be in fleece.
Its unlikely the lice came in the hay. So its more than possible they had them when you got them. If you got them from a petstore i would let them know.
