I've mentioned in my other thread (coupled it with Machete's hair loss problem) that she's developed a sudden crusty eye. I swear, it never ends. I've already decided she's going to the vet this week but I can't get her there til Monday. I tried gently wiping the eye & was able to clean a bit of it, but there is a crusty piece that isn't easily wiping away. I'm afraid to hurt her, do you think it'll be okay til Monday? If not, what could I use to clean it? I'm not going to be stupid & use a baby wipe or anything that can hurt/irritate her eye, but I'm not sure if I should try & risk doing something wrong, or if it would be okay to wait.
I hope she's okay. I've mentioned in my other post that this visit may bring bad news involving possible ovarian cysts but just keep your prayers with me. Thanks loves.

I would say just keep washing the eye and cleaning it with a damp clothe, is the eye swollen and crusty? If so the vet will probably recommend eye drops if it is just crust she will probably recommend a topical antibiotic that goes on the outer eye, my thoughts and prayers are with u and ur piglet in this difficult time

The crust is just hard in one spot & seems like it'll be difficult to get off with just a damp cloth. I was able to wipe it around the other part..the eye isn't swollen, just seems cloudy & has a small amount of discharge. She doesn't seem painful in it, just winces when I attempt to clean it because I'm sure it's strange & that little piece of hard crust is just difficult to get rid of.

You could try cleaning it with saline drops from the chemist. Your vet will probably give you special drops for it though.

So I took Machete to the vet today, the vet cleaned her eye & gave me some lubricant antibiotic for it, instructed me to use artificial tears to clean it. The other thing though is that she felt a cyst... I've called the vet who specializes in spaying, makes me feel like it wont be too difficult to deal with & that there is a lot of hope. She could get spayed, get rid of the cyst, and hopefully be okay... but I dont want to stay so optimistic & prepare myself for the worst. For anyone who has experienced ovarian surgery PLEASE give me your experiences. I need some information.. and some support

Hi there. Personally, I wouldn't go down the spay route. One (possibly two) of my pigs has ovarian cysts and our current course of action is to do nothing. She's not currently in any pain and a spay is a BIG operation for a piggy, very invasive. There are alternative treatments in the form of either hormone injections or a hormone implant if your piggy needs to be treated (there's an information page from Gorgeous Guineas here (you need adobe acrobat reader to open it) that gives the name of the hormone injection if you wanted to print it out and show your vet. For me, a spay would be a last resort, not the first option, so see if your vet is willing to try something else first.
