So I just thought Snow was getting a double chin, but when I felt it today I was shocked. It feels like a big ball of something! She didn't seem in any pain when I touched it and she has been eating and drinking normally. Any idea what it could be? I really hope it's not a tumor. I attached a picture and you can see the obvious lump under her chin that I mistook for a chubby little double chin.

I read that it could either be a cyst or a tumor and that cysts are fairly common. So my question is this: Is a cyst harmful? What are the effects of a cyst? Will she need surgery? Will it go away on its own???

I also read it could be an abscess and that abscesses go away on their own,but I really don't know. She is totally fine. Eating and drinking like crazy as usual. Running all over and not lethargic or having trouble eating. I also read that cedar shavings are bad and could cause health issues. I've been using cedar for awhile. I thought cedar was ok and pine was the bad bedding. :/ Could it be the bedding? Or just a cyst? Or an abscess from eating hay?? >.<

Looks and sounds like an absess. These need treated as soon as possible, especially as its near the throat/facial area. If its an absess it will need to be lanced (cleaned out) and antibiotics given to prevent infection
Pine wood shavings are fine to use aslong as they are kiln dried.

It feels like there's 2. One big lump and a smaller lump attached to it on the other side. :/

Its usually just cleaned using a needle and syringe aslong as it isnt too serious. Surgery is only done if its serious and the pig freaks out with the needles. Either way it needs seen to by a vet just to make sure. As if its a tumour it will need removed.

Well I'm waiting for my financial aid b/c I called the vet and they said they consider it surgery. -_- Snows still eating and drinking just fine. I read that some guinea pigs have a lump and then it pops in a way and leaks white stuff. Do you know if that could happen with this?? it feels very firm though. Almost like muscle.

It could pop on its own, but there's always a danger that it would pop inside the guinea pig rather than outside where you can see it, and that would be quite dangerous. Even if if pops outside, there's a risk of infection so you would need to keep it clean and get a course of antibiotics as a precaution. When abscesses are very full they can feel very hard.

I agree, it will probably require veterinary care, most times when abscesses pop it floods the lungs and that just causes even more concequential problems, I have little experience with gpigs but speaking as a veterinary technician having hands on experiance with rabbits, cysts do not "dissapear" by themselves, if it is swelling such as if she bit it or was outside and maybe a bee stung her, it may shrink a little but this seems unlikely since you mentioned one on either side of the jaw, it may be swollen saliva glands, depending on how far down they are (. I'm on my phone so the pic was blurry) I highly doubt it is a cancerous tumor if there are two of them but if it is an abscess she will be fine, like kayleigh said u just have to drain it fairly simple procedure, hope this helps.
