Okay, so Ollie's cage is on the top flOor of my house and in the summer it gets pretty muggy up there, and humid, I absolutely can not move him and I'm so scared he is going to be too hot! I have put his cage right next to the vent where the ac comes out ( it does nothing to help the room so I thought Ollie could get some use out of it ) I hate stressing about the upcoming summer and I'm so worried he will get sick, kayleigh I know your pigs live in a shed, do they have summer issues?

Hello, humidity and moisture can be deadly for pigs as bacteria ect will form which will cause URIs amongst other things.
My shed has 3 large windows which are open at all times, I also have a heater to keep it warm if it gets too cold.
Aslong as you can keep him clean, in a nice airy place (near a window) not directly by it. But near enough to get fresh air.
Heat is indeed more of a killer in pigs than the cold. What bedding is he kept on?

Hi thanks for responding so fast, it's not humidity so much as like actual heat, my guinea pig room ( his actual room has his cage that he can crawl out of at any time and play in "his room" he has the ac vent right next to his cage, plus a ceiling fan and low floor fan, I was just worried plus my blinds are closed to keep out excess heat, I feel like I worry to much but I just love him so much! Is there any way I can insulate the cage to keep the cool air from the vent in??? Plus he always has fresh water with very finely crushed ice cubes (so they all float at the top and he can't choke) and on mild days he is outside (in the shade) with ater food and a pigloo, (he absolutely loves dandelions lol) thanks again kayleigh

If you are at all worried about heat, then id remove all hideys, and just give him fresh bedding.hay to lay on. Keep air flow plentyiful and just keep an eye on him.
I wouldnt worry about insulating, If you have A/C and a fan it sounds like that should be ok.

Okay sounds good thanks again, as for bedding I am using that boxo bedding i mentioned in my other thread, I find it doesn't produce and retain as much heat when he urinates as wood chips I can do hay if that would be better though which do u recommend

The boxo looks good. So if your happy with it, id stick with it. I only use shavings as they are cheaper and easier for me.

The wood chips were what I used because the mulch bedding was like twice the price for half the bedding and I walked into my local bulk store and it had a huge package for the same price as my wood hips

I have seen cooling pads in pet shop for guineas that u pop in ur freezer n then when frozen thry lay on them to help keep cool, easier way someone told me was to fill pop bottle with water put in freezer and take out when frozen and pop in a sock so guinea dosent gt burns from the ice Hope this helps Farrahn

Helps immensely! Thank u very much! Now theese cooling pads.... Where do you get them? Petsmart? The only thing I could find was a "lava cooling rock" for chinchillas is that basically the same thing? If I could find a cooling pad I would def buy one! And the pop idea is fantastic too!

They are just the human cooling pads you can get. You must make sure the pigs cant get to them directly though to prevent them chewing on them. I think they work in the opposite way of heat pack

As faz89 said, a plastic water bottle (fill it about half full and put it in the freezer - don't fill it because the ice will expand and burst the bottle) covered in a sock or an old pillowcase is a cheap alternative rather than buying the cooling pads. Your piggy will probably lie beside it if he's too hot.

Such a smart idea thanks guys again, I was thinking (and its probably not a good idea) but could u put the cooling pad under the bedding? Take it out refreeze and bury it again?

Yes works just like a heat pad but opposite,it was pets at home I noticed while looking at toys, only £5,looked like round hot water bottle,i would cover twice with socks or pillow case,iv filled bottle with hot water before to help keep them warm and wrapped in socks and they have lain against it,not had any nibblers yet. Can u post pic of the lava cooling rock might be similar,iv heard people use cool tiles for them to lay on to in hot weather. I would wrap in up twice and put on top of bedding and refreeze when needed
