I got Peruvian Guinea Pigs flown in and after a week I noticed that the female was getting fatter....well asked the lady that I got them from, and she did try to mate her but didn't think she got pregnant....She estimated the mating to be about a month at least prior when I got them and I have them for a month so far. Well I started really looking to confirm pregnancy and held her 2 weeks ago....felt babies kicking, maybe 3 of them. Yesterday I could feel the outline of the fetuses. Earlier today her bones were not separated, but now they are! She usually runs from me but she came to me now....also feel like they are moving down, or is it my mind playing games with me.... ? I just am scared she won't do her job, and the babies would die....I work 14 hour days!!!! I believe she will have them while I am not around.

I think once the bones seperate it usually within 48 hours. My piggie started doing a lot of circling around in a corner the day she was due. I hope she waits for you to come home from work so you can watch her, but what a lovely surprise it will be for you when you get home!!! I was really scared for mine too, but try not to worry. I'm sure she will be fine.

Try not to worry too much. Chances are that she will do everything just fine and you'll come home to some lovely pups. There are some threads on here about how to help with a troubled labour, just in case you are there and she has problems, but most likely everything will be fine.

Sows are usually good mums. So i wouldnt worry too much. Make sure she has plenty of food and hay and just keep an eye on her.
When the pelvis opens its usually 24 - 48 hours until delivery.

Dont worry the pelvis can open and close several times before delivery. a picture isnt best to get on sows. But if you run your fingers down her spine to her bottom area you will be able to feel the pelvis with your fingers.

Hi thank you everyone, still no babies! I am going to post some pigtures of the mommy and a baby boar I have.... I am from the USA, so I am behind in time 4 hours. Please this is my first piggies ever.... so please comment on my set up, I don't know if it is right or wrong. I am going to expand their cage from the 16 square feet to maybe 32? I use Midwest cages now, but I am going to try to adapt the c&c and the ones I have now to a nice beautiful mansion.....I am using softwood now, but I do have to buy fleece....the wood is all over the house and it gets expensive. I have tried the fleece and I do love it!

She's very open again! I can fit a finger between the bones and she has a baby resting right on her female parts! I least I know that I am feeling the right bones....

She still open this morning but not as much as last night. Hopefully she stays open. I am positive she has at least two, I know possibly 3....I am hoping for 4! All healthy please, she is not that big, but she does have a lot of hair....my ideal litter would be one boar and the rest sows, or all sows....I will love and keep them all this first time because I expect beautiful colors from the boar she was mated with at the breeders....my boar is brindle and white....I will get those pictures up tonight after I clean the cage. So I still have no idea how far along she is....any ideas? What household chemicals can I clean the cage with? Its a machine washable bottom but I don't want to always be taking the cage apart....

Trigene is a good thing to clean cages with ect. Or your normal dettol sprays ect. Just ensure all is dry before adding bedding ect.
Keep us posted with your sow!!

Pebbles had her babies today....she lost them....why? She had 3, two she took the sacks off the mouth and nose did the umbilical cord, and the other one she didn't take the sac off and understand why that one didn't make it. I took them from her and she freaked!

How old is your sow? if shes young it could just be inexeperience and the whole labour has freaked her out.
Im sorry this has happened, mother nature can be very cruel.
How is the sow doing? Please keep a close eye on her, make sure shes eating, drinking and not bleeding from her genitals. If she seems slump at all take her to the vets. Give her plenty of high vit c and calcuim foods for now.
You done the right thing taking the young away.
Again im sorry

Kayleigh, the breeder told me she was 6 months old, I have had her a month.... I am going to go do a great deed in honor of the 3 babies.....on Wednesday hopefully, I WILL BE ADOPTING TWO BOARS FROM A SHELTER, TWO PERUVIANS!!!!!!! They deserve a home too. I know housing them will be hard and I have a boar of my own....but I know they will love me for it. My husband won't but the piggies will! I do prefer sows but I do get afraid of pregnancy with them if I don't know the age.

Age isnt usually a problem, unless they are young, Older sows generally do better. Delivering at 6/7 months is still fairly young and for a peru who can be large pigs. It sounds like shock and she didnt know what to do.
Good luck adopting your new boars.

So you think a 1.5 year old would be fine if she never bred before? What about the pelvic bones?
|
|
|
Post by Kayleigh on Mar 19, 2012 19:24:16 GMT
The whole pelvic bones is a myth. The bones do NOT fuse togeather, they just become less flexible i guess, like humans. I know of many people who have bred sows over a year old very successfully. It all depends on the sow, the breed and her condition. when the time is right to breed (and you know what your looking for) you will know.
1 1/2 may be just a little on the older side but if you wanted a litter i dont see why it would hurt aslong as she is healthy.
All breeders ect do things differently.

Just very afraid of c-sections, I have lost 4 piggies altogether this past month, with one sow a sheltie, that died from a lump that I questioned, but assured me was ok, lost her within a week of having her, then my 3 babies today.... just scared.....nervous,etc.

I wish i would have known, and the thing that ticks me off is I was awake that night, didn't hear anything, but I was also looking back and remembering signs, they probably passed away a few days before when I stopped feeling them. Also I thought she was having contractions on and off. Maybe I stressed her out? Maybe I should of left her alone. I know next time will be different. I removed the boars when she separated and she freaked! I but them back together, he is a baby, and she went threw hell. I feel bad....
