Caramel, our pig, has mastitis. We noticed this about 9 days ago.
her breast left breast was very swollen. Took her to the vet, and she was on an 8-day course of antibiotics - 2x/day. Tonight will be her last dose. I noticed yesterday and today, she has some loose stools, diarrhea(sp?). She has also been quite lethargic the last few days - not coming out of her hut much, not eating very well. I don't see her grazing much on hay. This is very concerning. Her breast, after 8 days, looks a bit better, but still swollen. Question - is eight days of meds sufficient, and it will just take some time for the inflammation to go away, or does she need to be on meds for a longer duration? I am sure the antibiotics are messing up her digestive tract, and maybe her appitite. Today, I gave her some probiotics. I opened on of the capsules I use, mixed in some water, and fed a small amount in a syringe. I know they are grazers, and should be eating hay and such qutie a bit, and her lack of appetite is worrying me. Any other suggestions or feedback from someone who has treated this problem is appreciated!
