So two weeks ago, Pebbles delivered and lost the entire litter. We really couldn't figure out why. I estimated her to be around 7-9 weeks, and she gave birth. She came to us pregnant already. I wasn't expecting it to happen when it did, so she was housed with our boar. I separated as soon as I could, but I think I was too late. This week she has been drinking like crazy and she is definitely filling in again. What should I do? I bought two sows last night, a Peruvian and a Abyssinian, since she has been in her pigloo lonely and depressed. Now she is very happy again. I know being pregnant again this fast is bad for her, but at least I know this time that she will have them, and be there to help her get them out of the sacs. What can I do to ensure this high risk pregnancy goes as smoothly on her health as possible?
It is always advised to remove any boars from a pregnant sows pen when you know she is pregnant to prevent back to back breeding. It is possible she is pregnant but you wont be able to tell for a few weeks yet. Theres no reason you cant introduce the new sows to her pen, just keep an eye on them all.
when did you remove the boar? how soon after? And how old is the sow? Is her health generally good?

I am confident she's pregnant as I didn't remove him soon enough as he was a baby himself. She is healthy, the litter she lost was her first, she's about 7-8 months old. I was also feeding them low quality food, and have since switched to Oxbow. The sows are a great addition, one is two weeks old and the other is around 2 months old. The pet shop sold me that baby very young, but my Pebbles is happy to have her around.
Oh 2 weeks is FAR to young to be sold. should be in with her mum as she still needs milk at this stage.
How young is the boar?
Ensure the sow has plenty of hay, fresh veggies and has exercise. She should be fine. It is however near impossible to know a sow is pregnant until shes at least 3 weeks along. then you can begin to feel the foetus inside. But if you think she was caught then you just have to wait and see.
I definitely agree on the age....too young! She's a lilac, and white with a hint of beige under her eye. So beautiful with red eyes! I will keep you updated.

So I gave Pebbles a bath last night and trimmed her nails. Her tummy looks like she inhaled a water balloon, she is either gaining a lot of weight from changing foods from Kaytee to Oxbox or she definitely pregnant. Her tummy feels the same way, when I didn't know she was pregnant the first time.

I'm no expert but surely you wouldn't be able to tell at two weeks pregnant, and the weight shouldn't be that quickly put on. Just to be on the safe side maybe you should just get her checked out as she has not long ago had a litter, just to rule out any problems after birth maybe?? The way she has ballooned so quickly would worry me a little bit. Don't want to worry you but maybe just to be safe.
If she has bloated as much as you have said i would get her checked out by a vet. At 2 weeks pregnant you shouldnt be able to visually see shes pregnant. And only a very experienced vet or breeder would be able to feel little foetus inside her.
She could be suffering from bloat which left untreated can be fatal. It could also be ovarian cysts.
Also bathing a pregnant pig should never be done as its very stressful. But going on what you have said i would say she sounds bloated.

So Pebbles does not have bloat and I was instructed to keep the vet updated. Possible pregnancy, he wasn't 100% sure yet. So I am going to weigh her every 3 days for now, starting Friday. I am sure of her dates but with a 5 day difference, because she was with Bam Bam for 5 days. So she is either 3 weeks from the 9th of this month or 3 weeks tomorrow. How much of a increase in weight should I expect? Doing greens and hay everyday...feeding the Oxbow still.
jordanthompson: hey I was wondering, can you use locker shelves like for school to build a loft in a cage instead of c&c grids? I have a few on hand and thought i'd ask.

caveycarer: Found my 20mth female pig collapsed in her run; no signs of illness prior. Picked her up and she was limp and hardly breathing. She then strained and passed what looked like a small blob of rubbery gelatine from bottom, then died. Any ideas what this was?

piggilicious: Caveycarer, this sounds to be a discharge put out that lets out all of the toxins either before or after the pig dies

aridicus: stacyb1970 Young pigs that smell like urine, are usually sprayed by mom or another sow in heat. They think someone is trying to mount them and spray. Young boars can also spray behind them, similar to a sow, but usually when a little older.

milliesalad: I have a male guinea-pig who is sitting in his own pee. I took him to the vet in case he had a urine infection. There was a very slight infection so the vet gave him antibiotics but he still has the same problem. Any other thoughts.
