Hello, my guinea pig (4months old) had a swollen/red/crusty foot pad and was lame and obviously in pain. We took him to the vet who xrayed and said no fracture but the bone is infected and there is some bone deterioration in the leg /hip area. He looks very swollen. The vet prescribed an antibiotic but no anti inflammatory or pain killers, (this is yesterday) the guinea pig is much quieter than usual and I'm concerned so I googled and found bumblefoot on there, which I think it is, the sites say to change bedding (no sawdust) and that if there is infection to the bone then often amputation is necc. The vet didn't Give any advice like this and also said they didnt know the cause of the infectin to the bone as they couldnt find a wound. (however the sore foot is easily visible), Should I go back to my vet and ask for a second opinion? They had said go back in a week but I don't want to leave it that long in case he is in severe pain with this condition

It sounds like your pigs in pain and at such Young age isnt great. Let us know how you get on...maybe create a new thread so we can all participate.kayleigh Sent from my GT-I9000 using ProBoards

I moved these to a new thread so they'll get more attention.
If there's an exotic vet nearby I would definitely ask for a second opinion.
At the very least I would ask your vet for some fuciderm. It's an ointment that is an antibiotic and antifungal. When one of my girls had really sore feet her vet gave it to us and it worked great. You apply the ointment 3-4 times a day, let it soak in for about a minute, and then apply a thick layer of vaseline to the feet to seal it in. Our girl improved within days.

Is it a front or back leg? I had a piggy that had to have one of her front legs amputated but afterwards she was in a lot less pain and was waddling round a lot more afterwards, and she was only 8 weeks. I would definately ask for a second opinion from an exotic vet though.
