So my Baldwin carrier Padfoot is about to pop. She's huge. There's a very good chance she'll have at least 1 Baldwin baby since she is 2nd generation and the father is 4th generation. I had a quick question regarding Baldwin babies. I know they are born with fur,but around what age do they start losing their fur??

I think they start loosing hair at just days old. Its a very odd process. Amazing yet odd!! Sent from my GT-I9000 using ProBoards

Are they both carriers? If so, you have a 25% chance of baldwins, 50% chance of carriers, and 25% of normal piggies. Hair starts falling out between Day 2-5, but they won't lose all of their hair until around 2 months.

The father is a 4th generation carrier & has 3 Baldwin siblings & the mother is a 2nd generation carrier with 1 Baldwin sibling.

What is meant by 4th generation, 2nd generation, etc. is where the pig actually is in the lineage. For example, your boar is the 4th generation of the line. If done correctly (breeding a baldwin to a haired pig every other generation), his line would look like this: baldwinxbaldwin=all baldwins; baldwinxcarrier=baldwins and carriers; baldwinxbaldwin=all baldwins; baldwinxcarrier=baldwins and carriers (your boar is one of the carriers). Does that make sense? He is still going to pass one copy of the skinny gene and one copy of the furry gene. Your sow will do the same. Genetics are sometimes frustrating and I'm still learning, but I got most of this information from skinny/baldwin breeders.

You should =) It's not uncommon that you would get one out of your litter. Usually, baldwins born from carriers are healthier and bigger (which is good among the hairless pigs).

I remember doing Punit squares in biology, using guinea pigs as the example (straight hair vs. "bed head" hair).

Yes! ^_^ She had 5 babies a few days ago. I haven't for sure got the sexes of them down. I'm super excited though because I think I might have lucked out and she had 2 baldwins! 1 is a female. The other I'm unsure. The 2 possible baldwins are losing hair around their noses & a little around the eyes.

They're gorgeous! How can you tell which are Baldwins? [/quote Baldwins begin to loose their hair around their face area very young, it looks as if they have mites or some form of fungal. Its an amazing process. very odd but lovely. I thinkwhen using carriers the only well to tell is wait until it happens. It would be nice to be updated with images, too see if they loose as much hair as a pedigree baldwin. Kayleigh

So sweet! That last pic makes the dear look like an armadillo from the front! So strange how they are born with fur and then lose it. And so quickly!
