I took my piggie Terra to the vet to do his nails today and when I got him home hes limping on his right front leg. He is walking on three legs and occasionally he will put some weight on it, Hes not bleeding and i dont see anything broken. Should I take him back to the vet?

I would definately take him back for a check over if you can't see what is causing him to limp. He may have caught him slightly when clipping nails?? Hope he is ok. What a worry for you.

Take him back and see if an x-ray is necessary. If it's a front paw then your vet will probably do a "wheelbarrow" test, where he'll hold up the back legs and force him to walk with his front paws to see if he'll put the sore one down. If he refuses then he might need an x-ray.
One of my boys had a very bad sprain in his front shoulder (it was horrible watching the vet examine him because he cried every time the vet massaged him), and really, all we could do was give it time to heal. It took a few weeks, but it came around itself. I doubt it's broken if he puts it down sometimes, but it's worth getting it checked.

I took Terra back to the vet today and good news nothing broken just a sprain. The vet who did his nails said he was very careful handling him and doesnt know why hes limping. Maybe he just jumped off his pigloo and twisted his leg. The car ride to the vets is pretty bumpy and he was very stressed poor little guy. He said he didnt even nick him or anything. Anyway Terra is going to have to heal up. He is doing better today. I am noticing that he is putting more and more weight on the bad leg.

Don't mean to be rude or anything, but why can't you trim his nails instead?

I would love to be able to do his nails but he is a squirmer and a biter. He bites very hard when you try to hold him to do his nails. I dont want to hurt him so I bring him to the vet and incedentaly he is very good for him .

So pleased he's ok and doing better. I have a piggie just like him who absolutely hates being held and jumps and wriggles. He's only young at the moment and haven't had to trim his nails yet but he's due a trim very soon and i'm dreading it! I manage all my others! It's so scary thinking of cutting their quick isn't it! I think if there was a travelling nail trimmer who would come to your house i would definately consider it!!! Kayleigh put on a photo of how to hold your piggie to trim their nails and i'm definately going to try it that way next as it looks so much easier to get at all four feet without having to keep trying to move them around.

Clipping nails takes time to get it right, i have pigs who bite when they get them done, but over time they become used to it and just let you get on with it.
I trim my pigs nails every 3 weeks or so, they are very used to this routine now and will happily let me hold them, clip then they get their reward (veggies)
Cutting the quick isnt a huge problem, you just need to ensure you stop the bleedind, you can use normal household flour or a special quick stop powder (styptic) If its not too bad, holding the end of the nail for a couple of minutes will also stop the bleed.
Its much like humans tearing our nails a little too short and it bleeds and stings a little.

It took the two of us to do Pop Tart's nails. He was a squealer! And he's normally the quiet one. Scout, our shy one, was very patient and quiet, even though she's our loudest wheeker! Go figure lol

Terra continues to improve. He is putting his foot down when he eats now. He is walking with a slight limp so I think he will be ok in a few days. I opened up the feeding area again on his cage. I had him in the play area until his leg got better (I didnt want him trying to walk up and down the ramp with a bad leg.)

The leg has gotten worse. I took him back to the vet and he's on pain meds He is on cage rest until further notice. I put him back in his store bought cage so he doesnt run and play to much.

i have a wriggler amongst my herd... i find a paw a day works best with her dont stress her out too much wrap her in a soft towel calms her down too just have a foot poking out. one thing i do like my piggies to get used to is being handled to be chcecked over ie turned on their backs without having a mahoosive epic tantrum, each paw picked up me being able to look in their mouths at their teeth that sort of thing is helps getting them to allow you to do this just incase you ever need to
