Hi all! I am a brand new Member to CutieCavies! I recently adopted our 10 month old male, official name Theodore Our Boy Friday (we call him Friday mostly, but also Theo, piggie wiggie, piglet, big boy, boo boy and various other nicknames, lol) who I adopted from the local shelter. He was featured pet of the day one lovely summer Friday a few weeks back, and when I saw his picture featured on my facebook page, I fell instantly in love and called about him right away. He is a precious chocolate point himalyan abyssinian. I went to see him at the shelter, and he came up to the front of the cage right away and let me scritch his little nose, ears and chin and BAM...I melted into a sea of piggie love! So I filled out the adoption form, was approved right away, but I agreed to come back and get him the next day after I could have a day to get together a cage and supplies and be ready for the little guy. Well, my hubby is amazing and with hints from the shelter, I did some online research and my hubby put together a piggie condo that evening...it is a 3 level C&C cage, a total of about 20 square feet of floor space, with sleeping/hidy quarters and feeding/water stations on top and bottom levels and the mid level landing is where I feed them their fresh veggies twice daily.
Yes I said them...lol. So we got Friday home and settled in, and after much reading and research all weekend and discussions with one of my vets who is a small animal/exotics specialist and also with the shelter I got Friday from, it was decided that every little piggie is happier and healthier if they have a little piggie friend, same sex please if babies are not wanted. I live in an area where there are no rescues, not for thousands of miles, in fact I looked on pet finder and the closest was in the US. Too far and stressful a trip I would think. So I checked local ads and the only one was an adult female. That was not going to work. So I did the only thing I could. I checked out pet stores. So I narrowed it down to one store, which I visited and studied a group of baby piggies for several days to establish the personalities and behaviour of the individuals of the group, and I was pretty lucky that in this group of 8 or 10 baby piggies that they were all male except one, so I had LOTS to choose from! I had three running favorites right from the first, and one turned out to be quite a bully, and one little hairy guy turned out to be very stable, not a fighter at all, and when confronted by the bullies he did not fight nor did he cower, he simply backed off and did his own thing. It was clear that he was the one for me. So home he came, and he is chocolate and cream so of course his name had to be Hershey, also known as wee piggie, hairy hershey, little man, baby boy, choclit, as well as a few other occasional names that come to mind. But we call him Hershey for the most part.
Hershey is now about 9 weeks old and after quarantining him for 2 weeks, I put them in a neutral floor pen for several days bonding time. He is now together with Friday in the 3 level piggie condo and they seem to have bonded well. They are not overly cuddly together as of yet, but there is not even a hint of fighting of any sort, they eat fresh veggies from the same dish together and chase each other around popcorning together, it is THE cutest thing to watch! I first thought Hershey was abysinnian but after a bit more research I think his hair is too long especially since he is so young. He could be Peruvian but I think probably he is abyruvian, given his rosettes and hair length at this age. If anyone can tell me for sure what Hershey looks like to you (or as sure as one can be from pictures) it would be appreciated! Hershey is still very skittish about being picked up but I am sure he will get used to it in time. I have cut both of their toenails just this past weekend, and they were very well behaved, while MR piggiluv (hubby) held them and I did the clipping.
So that is the beginning story of my piggies...they are such a joy to watch and I cannot believe that I never discovered my own piggie love before now!
