Welcome to the forum.
If you have any questions ask away. And good luck with the pre preparation for your piggles.
Have you decided on a breed and sex?

Welcome! I know I am biased but I think you made the best decision, no way can a lizard ever be as much fun and lovable as piggies!!!

My son just turned seven. He had originally wanted a hamster, but we decided on guinea pigs instead. They are so much fun to watch, and have become great family pets. You've found a great place to come and learn and ask questions. I am a much more confident piggie owner since I found this forum.

Thank you all I have not decided which breed to get yet. Or where to get one either. Looking into rescue or a breeder. My mom read some stuff about the males spraying if not fixed...do I have to fix the males or females? I will be getting two males or two females

No, males (boars) don't spray. Neutering can be a complicated and somewhat dangerous operation for boars (mine is neutered, but only because our other guinea pig was a female, not a male and we didn't want more babies). "Fixing" guinea pigs isn't the same as other animals. It doesn't change their behavior. A male who is aggressive towards other males won't change. That said, two boars or sows would be great together, especially if they are around the same age and have been together for awhile. With boars, if they haven't been together for awhile, try to get an older boar and a younger one. There is less problems then with establishing who's boss. So glad you've come to this forum! Ask any questions you might have, someone here will have the answer.

Guinea pigs do not spray like rabbits, But they do scent mark, and sows can and do squirt boars (if housed togeather and boar tries to mount and shes not ready)
Other than this, they will only rub their bottoms on the ground to mark their territory.
Any operation on any animal is risky. If youc an find a bonded pair of pigs that would be idea. But do bare in mind if you go for youngsters that as they mature they will challenge eachother and may end up not getting along.

Thank you Kayleigh! I didn't realize that females could spray, and I didn't want to give wrong information. Scout just gives Pop Tart a good wheeking when she doesn't want affection. It's so comical to see him try to "act normal" when she does that, like he was really really interested in having a drink of water afterwards!

Hello!! I advise getting the short-haired if you are going to be petting them A LOT. Short-haired ones, you can just pet them straight. With the abbysinnians, there are two many rosettes where they hate being pet cuz its always the wrong way. And the long hair, they are fine to pet but you'll have to keep up with the grooming and cutting, they don't like the cutting and grooming plus it's a lot of work. But the choice of breeds is your decision. Choose something good!! I hope I helped you decide!!

I have 2 Abyssinians Friday and Laurel, and Hershey is more like an Abyruvian so he has even longer hair amongst his rosettes, and they do not mind getting petted at all as long as I am consistenly gentle, so I don't think she has to limit her breed choices to short haired breeds just because she want to love on them lots! ;D

Ya, some don't mind.. But some do. I don't want to seem mean or anything... I'm just saying I prefer the shorthaired.
Everyone has their favorites!!

Jerry is an abyssinian. He's our only guinea pig. He's become best buddies with our cat Morris. Shadow on the other hand could care less. I've found this forum to be very friendly & helpful.
