this morning she was completely dry! she had a big fluffy towel in her cage after her salt bath last night. I noticed this morning her wees have gone from being very milky/orange to being clear again too which can only be a good sign. She is drinking through choice from her cranberry bottle too. She absolutely loves the cystitis medication though.. she tries to snatch the syringe out of my hand whenever i offer it to her. odd girl, that stuff tastes vile to me! I can tell shes feeling better though as she managed to get out of the pen I had her in while i was cleaning her cage out and she went for a little wander around my kitchen lol. Thanks for the help guys, shes not out of the woods yet as she still has a few open and weeping wounds on her bottom but she is improving slowly.

So we are making progress, today she is dry again but now her poos are very very soft and squidigy. the baytril and the fruit juice is obviously upsetting her poor stomach. vet bed arrived today but im not going to give it to her until the poo isnt quite as soft as it will get stuck in it the way it is.

Yes baytril will have that effect, probiotics should help and plenty of hay, readi grass (if you have any) and pellets.

Oh yes veggies too, just stick to a few of her favourites and ensure she gets plenty of fibre (hay, pellets)

cage needed 3 clean outs today despite using puppy pads, fleece and newspaper. lots of hay in a hay tray for her with more newspaper. absolutely dripping. had to give her a salt bath and dry her again before putting in a dry cage with more towels to keep her dry again. I guess all that diluted cranberry juice she drank had to come out some time!! lol honestly ive never seen her hooked on anything she loves the stuff!

Betty is continuing to improve. One week left of her antibiotics we hope. Ive taken away the towels now and just left her to bed on hay and newspaper which im changing daily as its not completely soaked and shes staying nice and dry Hoping to reintroduce her to her cage mates once the vet says she no longer needs the meds (the cage is a bit tricky to capture piggies without chasing them when its stacked) She is still quite swollen though and there is still a weepy cut which doesnt seem to be healing which is worrying. Fingers crossed she is through the worst of it now though

Try applying sudocrem to the swollen cut area. Works wonders and shouldnt rub off to easily!

Betty is now off the baytril and back living with the other girls! Fingers crossed she stays dry and the infection has passed! The piggy relationships have been affected by the mini separation whilst Betty was ill. Betty was the boss piggy and her second in command has stepped up whilst she was away and is now unwilling to step down again so lots of rumbling and teeth chattering going on all day. Piggy politics are so complicated! hope they settle down again soon. Betty has lost a fair bit of weight whilst she was very ill, any ideas on how to beef her back up again?

Bran mash and rolled oats is a good piggy weight put on thing. You dont want to pile the pounds on quickly though.

I'm now really worried, Betty is back in with the others in the cage and she has gone from dry to wet again, her entire back end and legs all soaking wet again! I don't know what to do anymore as the vet said she was fine but I'm thinking now she was only dry because I kept her on towels. She's just so lonely on her own so I don't want to keep them apart but she needs the cage changing twice a day for her to stay dry. She's stopped drinking as far as I can tell and just lies in the house all the time. I've been syringing water into her mouth and she's lapped that up. just want her to get better

Are you certain shes not sitting in wet areas? And its definately urine thats soaking her?
I would house her seperate again for a couple of days to see what happens.
Are you offering water in a bottle/bowl and are you adding anything to it.

The problem is that shes going upstairs into the house and then siting in the same spot so she wees and she's getting wet, she's no where near as active as she was just sits in the same place. I'm pretty sure it's wee that's the culprit - its dark orange/brown and stinks so bad! Urine scalds are awful all round her back end, she's quite bald in places now and there are some scabs. If she was just a little more active she would be able to stay dry There are two water bottles on the cage the others are drinking fine from it I only notice Betty isn't because she was a big drinker and now she won't give up her space in the house to get a drink. She's barely touched pellets. Hay and veggies she's eating though. I haven't added anything to the bowls or bottles they are the same as before

It sounds like the UTI hasnt been cleared up. What antobiotics did the vet prescirbe before? It sounds like she needs another course along with cranberry juice to get her over it. Have they x rayed for stones?
I would ask if they can prescribe Bactrim (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) a slightly stronger antibiotic but very effective in helping UTI's.
I hope shes ok, poor pig is going through alot.

She had 3 weeks of baytril Which I feel hasnt done anything she's still exactly the same as she was now she's back with the others like I said I think she was only able to stay dry before because I was cleaning out her section of the cage twice a day. Vet said the infection had cleared up but I think she's wrong. She hasnt had an x ray but I found an old post by dawn about a pig called Beth, she had the same symptoms and that turned out to be a stone. She didn't survive the op. Betty is about 4 years old, my vet doesn't seem to be very cavy savvy and I worry she wouldn't survive it either.

Just gone to check on her and she does look fairly dry this morning she seems to have gotten over her 3am bath and is fairly dry and most importantly not in the house but is sniffing and munching about in the hay. Wonder if I took the house away it would encourage her not to sleep in one place all the time

I removed the house and put in lots and lots of hay to encourage her to move and it seems to be working. Much drier that last two days. Ive continued giving her the cystitis medicine 3 times a day and syringing just water into her mouth - which she takes willingly - seems to be helping, shes now eating a lot of hay and has started nibbling pellets again

I gave her a bath again tonight and covered the scabs and sores from the urine scalds in sudocrem. While she was drying off I noticed that when she poos she does so very very slowly... like to the point where its hanging out for a minute or two before she can continue to get it out. While shes pooing she occasionally gets wee dribbling out and I think coupled with lying in the same place for a while this is whats causing her fur around her bottom to get wet. the area is still very swollen and must be very tender for her. Any ideas how long its going to take for the swelling to start to go away?

Post by Kayleigh on Aug 14, 2012 6:54:35 GMT
The swelling will only clean up once the UTI is gone as its the urine thats scalding her. The only thing you can do is keep up the antibiotics. and medication. Offer cranberry juice and keep her as clean and dry as you can.

but the vet took her off the antibiotics... Should I take her back and ask for an xray to see if it is stones and ask for another round of bactrim? Not sure my vet will give me this as the last visits all they offered was baytril and even on the last visit we told them that she wasnt completely dry and she said it was clearing up and that to bring her back if she wasnt eating or losing weight. Think I need a more cavy savvy vet but not sure where to find one.

I would defo suggest speaking to the vet and asking if further antibiotics can be given. It sounds like she needs them. Do you have an exotics vet you could see?

I dont know of any exotic vets in the area. I have however made another appointment for her tomorrow at 11. Im really dont want her to be given baytril again. I dont think its clearing up the infection at all. Would the vet see it as pushy if I requested an xray and a different set of meds? Ive heard that only baytril is licensed for piggys so not sure what chance I have of being given something different for her.

I wouldnt advise an xray unless your sure it could be a stone. As if shes urinating it sounds like an infection. Baytril, Bactrim and septrin are all piggy safe. I always ask my vets for "this or that" if you suggest it i dont see the harm.

Hi you should definitely ask for Septrin (Bactrim) last week when i ask my vet for it she says oh we dont stock that, so i says well could you maybe order me some which she did and i got it the following day, so yes ask deffo. Bactrim cleared up Juniors infection within 3 days yet when he was on Baytril....2 weeks later still no change.
