Hi All,
One of my long haired Piggy's has been getting lots of water discharge from his eye. It was just the right one but i have started to notice it in the left eye also. I took him to the vet and she gave me some eye drops but that doesn't seemed to have worked. Where his is long haired i can see the water is running down his cheek as making is fur wet. I am going to take him back to the vet after work today but has anyone got any ideas on what it is? His eyes themselves look OK and not inflamed or red he just has a watery discharge coming from them.....

Is there any damage to the eye? Is it cloudy in any way or can you see any scratches? Just checking that it's not an injury from a fight or from getting poked by a piece of hay. Also, how is your guinea pig in general? Is he his normal, happy self? Is he eating, moving around, and pooping okay? If he's not in good form, it could be some sort of infection. If all those other things are okay then I would think he has blocked tear ducts. One of my pigs had it last year and he was in perfect form otherwise, it just looked like he was crying all the time. Our vet prescribed fucithalmic ointment (I think it's a prescription-only medicine) which we had to put in his eye, and then we had to massage his tear duct. The tear duct is at the corner of the eye closest to the nose, so all we had to do was press on it firmly (not hard enough to hurt him, but no point in being too gentle otherwise - it won't do anything for him), and rub around in circles for a minute or so, every time we put on the ointment (sorry, I can't remember how many times a day, I didn't write it in my pig book). Now, that worked at first, but after a month he relapsed and the treatment didn't work the second time. We brought him back to the vet and were given Maxitrol (like fucithalmic ointment but with a steroid in it) to use twice daily for a week (still with the massages) and that cleared it up no problem. Just a word of caution, your vet must be 100% sure there is no damage to the eye before prescribing Maxitrol. Otherwise it'll make the problem worse. Your vet can confirm this by using fluorescein stain and looking at the eye under blue light

yeah he seems happy and fine. Eating and drinking and jumping around the place. No crust on his nose and i haven't heard any sneezing (as heard sometimes it could be a respiratory infection). His eye itself looks fine, its not swollen/red or misty in color. Will mentioned to the vet tonight about the blocked tear duct and see what the vets says. It makes sense as he seems OK just has very watery eyes. Poor thing!
