Ok I broke down and took our rescue pig to the vet check her lumps for pregnancy and to have her foot looked at. The foot is heeled and fine, but they figure she broke it and her toe sometime ago. Poor poor thing They do believe she is pregnant and that there are 2 early fetuses in there. With her being about a year I'm taking her back in a month to do X-rays. That way she will be far enough along to see the fetuses size and her pelvic canal. They are worried with her age about her not being able to deliver. Once the X-rays are done we can decide if we let her have a normal delivery, c-section, or spay her and abort the fetuses. I'm just overall looking out for her health. The vet is hoping she can deliver on her own as she said surgery is very hard on sows. Please put Puffles in your thoughts or prays

I really wouldnt advise an xray on a pregnant sow. It can be a very stressful and uneeded procedure, which could result in her delivering early or aborting the pups. If shes fit and healthy theres no reason she wont deliver perfectly fine. Plenty of fresh veg and hay and a good pellet, a nice stress free enviroment and fingers crossed it all goes well.
I always have my vets number to hand if im worried about a delivery but so far not needed it.
Just thought id add in, that im hoping the vet didnt say her pelvic bones may have fused due to her age. This does not happen, its a myth.
The lack of oxytocin can cause issues during labour in older sows but usually 2 years or older, many people choose to breed sows from 9-14months of age for the first time with bo trouble.
Im glad her foot is ok.

Sorry just re read the post, even the suggestion of spaying and aborting the pups because of her age is ludicrus. Why an earth would any vet suggest that.

Are you far from your vet? And do they have a 24 hour emergency number? If so, I would just let nature take its course. Chances are she'll be fine, but you can have their number to hand in case she struggles. Even if she wasn't pregnant, spaying is a BIG operation and not one to be taken lightly.

I feel so silly now. I had read before that its a myth about the pelvis fusing, but I figured this was a vet so take her word. I researched this vet as my normal vet doesn't do rodents and she came highly recommended. I feel much better now, but stupid I was told/believed all this.

You would be surprised how many people, vets included think a sows pelvis will fuse. It will not fuse. The sow should deliver just fine herself. Problems occur with overweight sows or very large pups as then as expected it would be difficult for them to pass through the birth canal.
I would not subject the sow to any more stress. Let her pregnancy progress and just keep an eye on her.
Best of luck.
Any questions or worries just ask.

Oh kales, Fuzzle and I are wishing you and Puffles all the best because we are kind of in the same situation. At least Fuzzle has had at least one healthy litter we know of.

I'm guessing 5-6wks as we can feel and sometimes see movements, although not as much today, curious about that. She looks a little broader than Puffles.
