Hi, I am only just starting out on breeding and showing, taking baby steps with lots of advice from breeders whom I respect.
I have been following a page on Facebook which is having lots of discussions about roans and what not to breed. I really want to ask questions but to be honest it does not always seem to be the friendliest of places, so I thought I would ask here.
Now I have a black crested sow in my shed who is a pet only as when you look at her hair, the black is tipped with brown. I understand she is a roan.
The thing that confuses me is white roaning. If a tri coloured teddy boar has white as one of his colours, is he a roan? And if so, can you only mate him with a self teddy or can you put him with a bi or tri coloured sow who also has white as one of her main colours?
I hope this makes sense, but with comments about deformed pups and dangers of putting two roans together on the FB page, frankly it is a little scary.

The entire roan / dalamtion genetic side of things can be very confusing.
Basically Roaning is white hairs mingled into colours thus making the guinea pig a non solid coloured coat. If in doubt always suspect roan just to be on the safe side.
Roans should not be bred to dals or to eachother to avoid lethals being born.
The roan gene cannot be carried (although alot of sites seem to say they can)
From what i have read teddies are one of these breeds where its confusing, if you arent sure of his parents or if he is indeed roan, best treat him as one.
I too often keep quiet on facebook pages as i dont like to be "keyboard" attacked. I only post on forums where i feel comfortable too. I avoid most other forums due to the huge anti breeding thing.
Asking questions is how we all learn. And its best to ask then to hope for the best.
Do you have a picture of the teddy in question?

Thanks Kayleigh, At the moment I am not ready to breed as my sow is only about 10 weeks old. I have pictures of my four Teddies on my new website (Only up and running an hour or so ago!!) I have had a look at all three boars and can not find any stray whites in the colour parts of them, same with Dottie, the sow.
If you have chance to look I would be grateful.
Also any comments on the website would be greatly received.

Ok ignore the above, just noticed you added me on facebook and your website is listed.
Looking at your teddies it doenst look like any are obvious roans. But teddies are one of those breeds who can hide it very well.
Your teddies are very nice, are they from a local breeder?
Im still learning/reading up regarding roans/dals but its very interesting, once you get your head around it.
Thankfully i dont need to worry about roans in my breeding/showing!

Ok so I have to ask.. Lol does the roan have to be with white? Or can it be two colors mixed together with no white? I have a sow that's just a pet because I suspect she is roan but there is no white. Her face is black and body is a mousy grey color with a little red/brown mixed in randomly. Lol am I right in calling her a roan?

She looks black and gold...the black may appear a strange shade as her hair is quite long and i find as it grows the colour can appear diluted almost. If that makes sense!!
