I have a sow who is no older than 6 months. About a month ago, I took her to the vet because she made these weird cough noises and movements like she was coughing up a furball. The vets didn't know much but suspected a URI. We gave her antibiotics and she got a little better but started losing weight, so we took her to the vet again. They still do not know whats wrong with her. Now instead of squeaking a high pitched squeak she used to, she makes a type of wheezing noise instead but can still squeak in a lower tone. I'm sure I should take her to another vet but do you guys have any idea what it is??

Do you know what antibiotics you were given? Just double-checking they were guinea pig friendly. It definitely sounds like there's something going on there. Have you ruled out an allergy? I thought one of my pigs was suffering from constant chest infections as he was always cracking when he breathed, but then I realised it was an allergy to certain brands of hay. If your pig is on shavings then I would suggest changing to newspaper and hay for a few days, just to see if there's an improvement. It would be no harm to ring the vets in your area and ask them if they have guinea pig experience. An exotic vet is best, but they aren't too common. Guinea Lynx has some questions you can ask to see what sort of piggy knowledge your vet has. If they're a good vet, they won't mind you asking.

She was given Baytril and improved slightly. We had our guinea pigs off of woodchips after we figured she was getting sick but she still made the weird noises. Now they're back on woodchips but I'm going to go get some carefresh bedding or should i just try newspaper?. Well, all they eat is Timothy Hay and pellets, both from Oxbow. I give them some cilantro and romaine lettuce sometimes as well. I'll switch to Kaytee again. I don't know if she's allergic because I switch off between Oxbow and Kaytee.

Is your sow kept indoor or outdoors ? during the could spell, l had the heating on 24/7 , and 3 old sows and a young'ish boar developed breathing sounds that varied from raspy to hooting ,
They had no other symptoms,/ It lasted from hours to two days / Now all clear with no problems / Vet could find nothing and has no idea's ?
Previous to the cold spell the humidity in my pig rooms was 55-60% then during the cold spell and subsequent need for central heating , the humidity levels dropped to 25-30%
Apparently dry air is know to affect Rats in this way.
l am not saying this is what caused it , l just do not know ?
this was several weeks ago now, and all is well with them
But Breathing problems with pig should be taken "very" seriously , as they crash and burn very quickly !! if in doubt best see your Vet !!
