I know I'm taking over the boards here anymore, but I guess that's what happens when you've got something going on that's resting on your mind. After losing my Chipotle this morning, I started wondering if with the two of them together, I've been missing something about Machete's eating habits. She's very skinny, but she's always been that way. She has ALWAYS drank a lot of water, since I got her back in 2008. She has some problems with barbering, for the longest time we thought she was having it pulled out by my other one but then I caught her doing it to herself. Now after losing Chipotle, I'm super paranoid...
I've always offered tons of different foods for them. She NEVER turns down lettuce/greens/spinach/etc but I've always had trouble getting her to eat things like carrots & such. Then today I got thinking & recently she hasn't been taking things from me, like tomato's and treats. She's hungry & interested, but when she comes over to it, she's not taking it.
I might be going crazy just out of grief for my other, but I really want to make sure that Machete's healthy now..I can't bear to lose her too. I'm going to make an appointment tomorrow with the same vet.
Thanks for putting up with me guys. Sorry I keep posting so much.

You have every right to be worried. This board has put up with me since Friday and my ordeal lol, we're all here for each other. I don't know enough about piggies yet to really give you any advice but I'm sure taking her to the vet tomorrow will rest your mind a bit. Best of luck, sending good thoughts.

I know how paranoid you must be =( Vincent was my original and we lost 2 piggies due to illness when we tried to pair him and I got so worried that it was something I did, or if it was Vincent that caused it, but it was just unfortunate circumstances =( Everything does get better with time =) With her food, some of mine don't like taking food from me, but when I just put it down on the floor he went straight for it. I have no idea why but that's what he does =S It might just be a phase like that. If you provide the food then they'll eat if and when they're hungry =) A vet check would be perfectly fine if you're worried as it'll put your mind at rest =) just make sure it's an exotic vet that deals with guineapigs, some don't and have caused various problems with spotting illnesses with people on this board before =S

Alice, thanks for your feedback & advice both here & with my other post about my lonely piggie Machete..I found a vet I'm comfortable with that I met just with Chipotle being sick. My regular vet is very unfamiliar with exotics, I just went to him with my dogs. When Chip got sick, I sought out another place not far from here & found a doctor I really like. She's very good with exotics, especially cavies & I'm excited that i found her. I hope that she can help me with Machete & let me rest my mind. I've looked at her teeth & she was recently at another vets who looked at them & didn't see any problems, but again he wasn't that used to guinea pigs. The fact that she willingly eats lettuce & hay makes me wonder two things... a) is she just picky or b) is she unable to chew hard things..or maybe like you said, just doesn't want to take them from me. But I made the appointment, it's only a few days from now & hopefully I'll feel better.
Thanks again!

It sounds like your pigs just a little upset over loosing their partner. Keep offering different foods and maybe getting a friend may help.
If your worried about health then a vet trip is something you can do. Its unlikey the teeth are overgrown if you feed hay on a daily basis. But its worth a check.

I'm taking her Tuesday, I'm hoping I'll get some ideas on what to expect with her...I think it's a combo of things. The only reason I really started worrying was that I'm wondering if the reason I didn't notice her not eating was because my Chipotle was doing most of it...but at the same time, I'm pretty sure I saw her dipping her face in the food bowl. I read somewhere that sometimes they do that but don't eat..I've put a bowl of food in with her & she has barely touched it But I'm glad that she's at least eating the lettuce & the kale as well as some hay, and still drinking..I'm also going tomorrow to PetSmart to talk to the lady there (I know her pretty well) about the guineas there. I'll keep you guys posted!
