2 days ago, I noticed my guinea pig's right eye had a reddish hue to it. He might of had it longer because it is not incredibly noticeable. It isn't bright red like I see in some of the pictures but compared to his other eye, it's definitley red. Not only that, but in the center of his eye there is a light milky white spot and the right eye is very sensitive if you try to examine it with a penlight (he doesn't even flinch with his left eye). Looking at these threads it doesn't sound like anything posted but I was hoping more experinced guinea pig owners and/or breeders can offer me some insight as to what it is. He's my baby and I'm heartbroken over it :-(

A white spot in the eye is usually due to damage, a hay poke maybe. The red tinge however is odd. Are you sure its not in both eyes? A picture of the face of the pig may help.
What breed and age is the pig?

He's about 3 years old and I believe he's an American Satin. I will do my best to get a picture up soon. Thank you for replying

It looks like an injury. Hay pokes will sometimes clear on their own, but because of the redness I would be inclined to get a vet to look at it. You'll probably be given drops or an ointment. Don't worry too much. I went through a phase of having pigs scratch their eyes or get seeds stuck in them (they all seemed to happen at once!) and you'd be amazed how well their eyes recover. It'll be back to normal in no time

Eek that looks like a pretty bad hay poke or other form of eye injury. I would suggest a vet visit just to ensure theres no internal damage behind the eye causing pain or swelling. He may well have gone or being going paritally blind too due to the whiteness.

Took him to the vet today. I would have taken him sooner but my work schedule would not allow it. He has a corneal ulcer and an infection most likely from a hay poke and him continually irritating it by scratching. He precribed me an oral antibiotic, antibiotic eye drops, an eye drop for discomfort and an eye drop to promote corneal repair. He is unsure what the damage has and will do to his vision but hopefully this regimen works and his vision will be restored and well as the condition of his eye

One of my girls had a corneal ulcer before and she recovered great. When the vet checked her eyes a few months later he said there wasn't even a trace left, and he thought it would have left a bit of a scar. So best of luck, I hope the recovery goes well :-)
As for the eyesight, guinea pigs don't have the best eyesight anyway, so even if he completely loses sight in that eye it won't impact on his quality of life at all :-)
