Hello! My boyfriend and I are searching for our first pair of cavies. Preferably same sex babies. He is looking for a tri-colored american; white, black, and brownish. I am looking for an abbyruvian; same tri-colored, but I will consider other colors as well since mine will be harder to find. If you guys know of any breeders offering babies that meet these preferences, please let me know. Also, I was considering a satin variety but heard that the satin gene is associated with bone density problems. Any advice??? Thanks in advance, Johanna.

Yes satins are associated with OD. There is a thread on this so before you get a satin please read. Hello and welcome to the forum. I have a tricolor american boar named Terra.

Thank you! I'll be sure to check out that thread. I would definitely prefer a healthy cavy over a "shiny" cavy any day!

Hi Johanna, welcome to the forum We have a section where breeders can post their sites: here so if you look through that you might find someone in your area that breeds the pigs that you want. Not all satins have OD, though they certainly have a higher prevalence than non-satin guinea pigs. By dealing with a reputable breeder (look for reviews on the internet, see if any message boards talk about them), they'll be able to tell you if they have OD in their lines and if so, to what degree. If they're really a good breeder then, in my opinion, they shouldn't be using pigs that they know suffer from OD to breed, since they should be aiming for healthier pigs, not just a shiny coat. They won't always know before pairing a boar and a sow as the symptoms don't kick in for a while, so a breeder whose pigs have OD doesn't necessarily mean they aren't good, but they should be aiming to improve those lines and be careful about pairing those pigs and their offspring in the future. Where are you based? That will help us to know if we know someone nearby who may be able to help you

A location would help as we are all over the world!! haha.
As for the satins, aslong as they are bred well its fine. I have a satin boar who is in perfect health. Its all about the breeding!! In all cavys not just the satins!
best of luck in your search. Any questions ask away
