I am new here. I had another username and forgot it..so I had to create another. So I'm back! Haha. Anyways, I had to take Dixie to the vet tonight, she will not poop, urinate, eat or drink and she has discharge coming from her nose and crusty eyes. The vet told me it is an upper respiratory infection and she is dehyrdated and to puree her pellets, and some baby food to feed her, and add vitamin C, and her medicine to it. They gave her an antibiotic shot, and antibiotic medicine in pill form. They told me to feed her 10 cc's of her food every 3 hours, I think this is alot of food. So far I've tried to feed her twice. She could not eat the whole 10 cc's the second feeding. Do you think I should spread it out more? Any suggestions or help is greatly needed & appreciated. I really don't have the money for all the expensive tests and other things as I have to get surgery Monday. Thank you!

When I was syringe feeding my girl Hilda, at first she wouldn't take more than 3-4ccs a feed, so I started feeding her more often. What you can do is just give her as much as she'll take. Be sure she's always chewing - if she's not chewing she's not swallowing - and get as much food into her as you can. When Hilda started feeling better she was eating up to 20ccs a feed! But at first she couldn't manage more than that. If you're crushing up her medicine to give her, make sure you're only mixing it through a small amount that you know she'll definitely eat. Otherwise if she's not finishing the mixture she's not getting a full dose of antibiotic. Personally I think guinea pigs should always be given liquid antibiotics so they can be syringed straight into the mouth and the dose is more accurate, so if you end up going back to your vet, be sure to ask for this as tablets can be tricky with pigs. Make sure the baby food contains only piggy-safe ingredients. It's harder to find that you'd think! No meat, dairy or potatoes are allowed. If you have a food processor or even a hand blender then puréeing up a bell pepper will be even better than baby food as it's not too different to what she normally eats and is fresher and has no additives. Also, be sure that you also give her 3-4 ccs of water when you're feeding her as pigs can get dehydrated very quickly. If she doesn't start pooping in the next 24 hours then go back to your vet and get him to give her gut a good massage and make sure there are no blockages. Our vet also gave us liquid paraffin to give Hilda, which was yucky, but it made sure that anything that was in there got moving. Here's the thread with Hilda's updates if you'd like to read about a similar experience Good luck, Dixie!

I hope Dixie gets better soon. When I was syringe feeding Terra he wouldn't take 10 cc at first either. Whatever you can get into her will keep her digestive system moving and that is very important as they need to eat frequently to survive.
