Hi i just joined, this is my guinea pig, Justin. he is an Abyssinian male guinea pig. He absolutely loves to run play and hide. I cant set him on the floor for a second without him dashing under the couch or somewhere, so i have to block off everywhere. He hides in his box that i put in his cage all the time. When i give him a bath he really hates it, i gave him one last night and took a slower, gentler approach which kept me dry and him a lot calmer. Although he still did not like it. I love to play with him and train him tricks. He knows circle and beg when i give the command. But i don't think i will ever train him stay, he is too energetic! He loves his hay, i hide it in a empty toilet paper roll, i stuff the hay in it. it keeps the cage cleaner and he has fun rolling it around and playing with it. I would love to feed him the HAFF diet, (hay and fresh food)but im still working on a list that will show me what i have to feed him in it. But its really tricky to get everything in it that he needs! Anybody feed their piggies the HAFF diet? If i finish the list i will post it.

Welcome to fhe forum.
Your pig sounds lovely. If you want him to be less prond to hide, remove the hideys, these encurage pigs to hide
Iv never heard of the haff diet....
Not all pigs enjoy bathes, i would only bath if he needs it. Abbys are known to be slightly fiesty pigs but its just their personality
Welcome again

I cut a little off his back once because his bedding was getting stuck to it,but just a little. :/ i guess i never thought of him as being a cross because the websites i went to showed pictures of guinea pigs that looked like him. i dont remember the site names, but i did save a pic to my pc, here and here is another pic of him

Ohh hes lovely! Looks like an abby there, with a longer coat (so wouldnt show in pedigree classes)
A pedigree pig, like a dog, is a single bred animal, I breed black pointed himalayans, and rex. they are a breed.
Thats a lovely looking american crested too in the last picture.

This is Justin's cage, they are kind of bad pics but.... oh well :3 I have to scrub out my igloo so its not in there, the food bowl is grey so have fun trying to find it lol (he also spilled and buried most of his food, dont worry, he eats it and i give him more) I just cleaned it so dont think it always looks this way, and yes its very clean. the newspaper makes it look kind of dirty because its white and black.,.... and here is cute little justin in his doorway Also the cage is big enough, even though it does look kind of small, i have to set up the larger cage. but im not sure i can use the larger cage as it got left out in the rain (it did not rust though, any tips?)

Aslong as the outside cage gets a good clean it should be fine.
How often do you clean the cage? Do you use anything under the shredded paper?
I find with smaller cages its best to remove hideys etc and just use a mound of hay. The pigs are usually far happier.
The cafe itself is fine for a single pig.

I clean the cage out weekly, i put down 3 layers of plain newspaper under the shredded newspaper, thats all. although i do clean the cage out before the week is over if for some reason its a lot dirtier than usual. I am trying to figure out a way to feed my piggy hay without putting in on the bedding, because then he does not eat it. I have been stuffing it in toilet paper rolls as seen in the picture, but they run out really quick. I don't want to buy a hay wheel because i have heard they are hard to stuff and the hay falls out. and things that hook onto the cage like a hay rack never fit because of the way the bars are.

well i put a pile of hay in the litter pan, he seems kind of hesitant to go into the litter pan though. :/ of course now he might start actually going in the bathroom there, which is fine with me. but then he wastes hay and makes a smell Anybody got any ideas a way to keep the hay clean and let my piggy eat it with ease?

Guinea pigs love to lay in, hide in and eat their hay. But if your worried about waste then a metal clipped hay rack should work for keeping "eating" hay clean.
Hay racks like the one on this website should work well, (the little hooks at the top) will clip onto the bars of that cage just fine (on the inside of course)
I would strongly suggest housing your pig on a different bedding if you can, shredded paper gets wet very easily and can tangle around limbs. Are you able to use a woodshaving (not sawdust) this is cheap to buy, easy to clean and very absorbent. Its also a flat bedding so the pig may enjoy this far better, You can use flat newspaper beneath it, then once a week roll it up and bin it.
What hay do you use?
