My girl Mabel hates being petted, but I went to give her a little tickle under her chin last night and felt a giant lump! When I took her out I could feel a massive lump just under her jaw, totally invisible unless looking at her from below because of her long sheltie fur. It was firm but not solid, if you know what I mean, and she was acting totally normal, eating, playing with her friends and didn't seem to be in any pain from it.
I brought her to the vet this morning. He tried to aspirate it but the stuff inside was too thick, so she had to be knocked out to get it fully cleaned. Xander had an abscess before and had it cleaned out in his senses, but his was on his belly so I guess the location makes a difference.
So I picked a very sleepy Mabelline up this evening. The vet had worried it was related to her teeth, but he said that they seemed fine when he examined them. He said the pus was really gross, but he's really happy with how it went. Mabes has a big X-shaped wound in her neck now, which we have to clean and massage to keep it draining, and she's in antibiotics for ten days.
I'm a little concerned about the location - stuff around the neck can be troublesome - but fingers crossed she makes a full recovery.

Neck absesses are always bad. Worst location for anything to go wrong and equally difficult to keep clean and dry .
Im glad she came through the surgery ok, fingers crossed it all heals quickly and with no issues

That's where my piggie Fudge had her absess and it's been a few weeks since her op now and she seems to still be ok. I was worried that it might come back as in such a difficult place and i really struggled with the cleaning out bit as i wasn't sure i was doing it properly but so far so good!

Thanks! She's nice and bright today, not 100% back to normal, but she came running for her morning veg, so she's definitely recovering

Mabel got another lump on her neck I noticed it last week. It's on the opposite side to where the last one was. It was about the size of a marble, so for the week I monitored it and gave her some baytril to see if it would bring it down. It didn't shrink but it didn't get bigger either. We went to the vet this morning and he lanced it and cleaned it without knocking her out, which I'm pleased about. I think Mabes was a bit stunned but she didn't cry at all and the vet reckons she'd have barely felt it with the swelling. We're back to cleaning now. Fingers crossed this doesn't become an issue.
