Ok great - thank you. I called my vet and he told me the ointment I have for her is correct and it's likely the common ringworm. He also told me to do everything in my power to get the other babies back to their mother.

[/quote] Geez, here it's about $70 for around 750mL - I have Scottish highlands so lice and more treatment is essential. And yes, it is for cattle but it works on pretty much everything! I even use it as mite treatment on my mice

WOW. The pigs had a nice weight gain since yesterday! Female #1 (smaller) - 93g +8g Female #2 - 124g +6g Mom - 627g +14g
Mom's gaining weight......?? My mouth nearly hit the floor. lol

Well if she was still with a boar upon arrival there is a chance she could be pregnant though in my eyes 627g is rather small, even my smallest (250g at 2 months) are now in the 800g-900g range at 6 months while my boys are over 1kg at 5 months.. She could be gaining weight due to a better diet or it could even just be that she is still very young herself and has yet to reach "maturity" The weight gain on the bubs is great! Just continue to keep an eye on the smaller one

I don't know if she was with the boars when she arrived. She could've been and they separated them at the shelter. The other female she was in with looked like the offspring of the second male while her current litter looked like the offspring of the first. I wouldn't doubt if they had them all caged together and were letting everyone breed back to back. They told the staff ''We got them from a pet store and they were suppose to be 2 males'' But that's such a common excuse.. and don't see how it's true with 4 adults.
She's eating well and drinking a ton (went through a little over half a bottle last night) so I'm sure she's just not as stressed out and probably enjoying herself now. ha

How much do pups usually weigh when they are ready to wean?
|
|
|
Post by Kayleigh on Dec 16, 2012 14:59:52 GMT
Weight varies quite a lot when pups are weaned. It depends on the litter size, breed and the parents. My rex litter are 8 days old and my smallest is 140g and largest is 171g and my himalayan litter are 3 days old and are all over 110g.
Pups should be eating well before weaning, usually by 3 weeks old this happens. The sow will usually still allow pups to suckle but will gradually nudge them off and she will dry up.
Pups should be fit and active and eating most things offered.

How much do pups usually weigh when they are ready to wean? As Kayleigh said, weight varies A LOT. I can only go by when I got my guineas so for example: I got Abby and Athea at around 6 weeks and they were 200-230g which is teeny. Tobi at 6 weeks was 550g+ and my big boys when I got them at 7 or so weeks were 600+

So should I keep the babies for another 2 weeks or so? Maybe 3? Assuming they're a week old now.
Here are weights this morning: Female #1 (smaller) - 103g +10g Female #2 - 137g +13g Mom - 637g +10g

Yeah, they're quite small so I'd give them at least two weeks. Since they're females you don't need to worry about removing them if they're getting frisky. Will they be staying with you until the shelter finds homes for them? If so, you can leave them together as long as you like.

Once the babies are old enough they will be going back to the shelter to find homes. I can't keep them here as I don't want them to catch the infection if they haven't already. (No signs, but as the weeks go on..you know)
I hope to stop by the shelter today and put some ointment on the males' ears as I believe they are still there.
Is it ok that the momma is chewing the newspaper? I own chinchillas and if they started this I would take it out...but I'm not sure if she's eating it or if it's normal for them to do.

We called the shelter and told them how important it is we get the babies back.
They'll try to get them back to me.

That's great news! Considering how small they are, I'd leave them with Mumma for 3 weeks, possibly 4 if that's at all possible but that could just be me. Good luck with it all

Thats good news. Do you know the sex of the other pups? How many are there?
I would give them a week or two with the sow, keep an eye out for rumbling, chasing and mounting though.
Is the sow still lactating?

Eating newspaper is okay, it'll not do any harm. Just make sure she has enough hay. Some of my pigs eat their paper just because they like it.
Keep an eye on the babies when you put them back in just in case the mum rejects them. In that case you'll have to hand feed them.

Post by Kayleigh on Dec 17, 2012 20:38:46 GMT
Its unlikely the sow will reject them, if shes looking after her current two. Im yet to experience this, its more likely a sow takes on young.
I still find it very strange that anyone would seperate a sow from her litter, or part of it. Hmmm very odd.
Ensure you sex them when you get them back, in an ideal world they would be sows, then they could live with mum until they were 6-8 weeks. buts its unlikely to happen haha.
Best of luck

Maybe I could rub the current pups on the other babies before putting them all together? I have some critical care (again, own chins and had some left over from a rescue.) I read that babies could be supplemented with this? So should I do any rotating and supplementing if they babies coming tomorrow are low in weight?

Post by Kayleigh on Dec 17, 2012 20:57:32 GMT
You can put a bottle on the cage, i wouldnt use critical care just yet, not unless its needed. Are they nibbling on the pellets? veg? hay?
I would suggets putting a bottle of milk supplement on the cage, evap milk/water, etc. The sow will probably drink this, but the pups should copy her too.
You can rub the bedding against the pups if you wish, im sure the sow will accept them all though.
Best of luck

Don't think these babies will be getting here today.
I'm starting to wonder..should I just say to heck with it? They made it this long without their mom?

Without knowing the condition of the pups is hard to say, Iv had people purchase pigs at 5 weeks of age, then they died because of poor upbringing/stress.
Its vital pups are given correct care, if they are a 7-10 days old, they have approx 2 weeks to nurse from the sow, learn to be a pig and explore with their mum.
If they are healthy and the person looking after them, knows what she is doing thats good, but from the sounds of things the rescue really should take the advice from people who know what they are talking about.
If they are gaining weight, and are active thats good. BUT the person must ensure she sexes them soon, so she can prevent inbreeding/breeding too young etc.

I was told they will not give the pups back. They said their vet checked them and 'they're eating and playing' and to 'assure me' they're ok.
Hopefully they grow alright.

Its such ashame that the vet has "ok'd" this. You wouldnt take a puppy or kitten away from their mum under 6 weeks of age...so why a guinea pig!
These people clearly dont have the pigs best interest at heart. I really hope they do thrive and survive. I also hope they have been sexed correctly, last thing thats needed is babies getting pregnant by siblings.
Its difficult but focus on the ones you have, ensure they thrive and grow on well.
Give advice and help as best as you can, some people choose to ignore information and theres nothing we can do.
This rescue should do research prior to making any decisions and they should have known that young pups should not be ready to adopt out for a good while. Heck even before isolation and health checks.
keep us posted with your trio

Ohhh what gorgeous pictures!! You can see just how small the pups are against their mum!!
They are gaining weight wonderfully!! You should be very proud.
Does the fungal seem to be clearing up at all? It will get a little worse before it gets better.
I would get some imaverol if you can, so you can dip the sow when shes had a couple of weeks of treatment with the fungal cream.
Very pleased everyone is doing well.
Your doing a great thing : )
