Hi! My name is Sarah and my fiance's name is Marian. We just bought a guinea 2 days ago. It was basically like love at first sight for us! She's blind in her left eye and she was living with some pretty abusive brothers at the pet store. She's 4 months old, a tricolored guinea and she's very shy and jumpy, we call her Penny.
We signed up for this website because we are new parents to a guinea pig, we're very new to this and thought this would be the perfect place to go to for all of our questions and concerns.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cavies
First of all double check the sex of your pig, its likely she is pregnant if housed with boars in the petstore.
Pictures would be lovely, any questions ask away!

Welcome to the forum! I hope Penny makes you very happy. I wouldn't worry about her being blind in one eye - guinea pigs manage very well with diminished eyesight. Just be sure to make a little noise if you're approaching her from her blind side so she knows you're coming As Kayleigh said, there's a chance she's pregnant if she was housed with boars, so keep an eye on her. Watch to see if her shape changes etc. She should be fine, but it's good to know if there are babies on the way.

We definitely find this website useful and insightful! So thank you! And yes, we've checked a couple of times to make sure she was a girl and wasn't pregnant, believe me, that was the first thing on our minds when we picked her up haha. So far we don't believe she is. We are keeping a very close eye on our little Penny. We do have some extra questions on a couple of things that she does.
1. She doesn't make the "usual" guinea pig noises. 2. She chatters her teeth constantly when we're handling her. 3. She threatens to bite us a lot. 4. And she really doesn't move around a lot when we lay her on the floor for exercise.
Now, we have a couple of animals and we know how to handle them and try not to irritate them or hurt them in anyway. Do you think maybe she's just still nervous with us? How do we gain her trust, I mean, I know it will take time but I wanna know some things that would help us out a little bit right now with her.

It just takes time. She will eventually settle down and start to bond. I've had mine going on three weeks and they are just getting used to us are starting to come up to us when we're talking to them. One thing I do is I when I'm not holding then or they're not out running around sometimes I just sit by the cage and talk to them or read a book, you know whatever so they get used to my presence.

Yeah, piggies take a bit of patience. Handling little and often, offering treats, constantly talking to them, they all help.
One thing that can help with biting is thoroughly washing your hands before handling your pig - if you smell like food they can get a little confused. Also, take note if she's trying to bite you only when you touch her in certain places. For example, lots of pigs don't like being touched on the butt or sides, so they try to let you know by nipping. Another thing is make sure you don't put her back straight away after getting bitten, as this will teach her that biting will make you put her down.
As for the floor time, you have to remember that the floor is a new environment with new smells and textures, so it can take a few goes before they get used to it.
