I went to an in-home "rescue" to let my son pick out his first guinea pig. There was one there that didn't have an eye. I am wondering if it should have been sewn shut? His wasn't and the place didn't seem all that legitimate. I'm not sure if he received proper medical care. When I asked the lady about it, her responses seemed strange to me. If he is not being properly cared for I would like to go back and get him so that I can take him to a vet. Does anyone know anything about this?

Its always a difficult situation with rescues/breederd etc as not all are registered or require to be. Most pigs iv seen with an eye missing the lids are either sewn togeather or they slowly close over time. It depends on the reason for the loss of the eye. What were the reasons behind it, did they say?
Aslong as the pigs are clean, healthy , in clean conditions and look happy then hopefully they are legit (the rescue) many people however hide behind the word rescue to fool some people.
If your unsure then walk away, the same goes when visiting breeders.
Go with your instinct.

I would take him and have him seen by a vet. I really don't know about eye injuries but it seems to me it should have been sewn shut.

Wow, no eye! I would hve been concerned to! I have a cat with only one eye but it was from an URI he was very sick when I got him and the eye was already gone it took us 2 months of antibiotics to get him over it. Now he looks like Garfield minus an eye! LOL

When I asked her about the eye she seemed uncomfortable and said "Well um he must of scratched it or gotten in a fight...at some point in his life". Her home wasn't clean and smelled badly of urine and I wasn't invited back to where the rabbits and guinea pigs were housed. So I'm not sure of their conditions. But I did notice that she was scooping their food with a measuring cup that had a lot of poop on it so I'm assuming the conditions aren't great. And usually animal rescues will seek medical attention for injured animals but she didn't mention anything about his being seen by a vet. I think I will go back and rescue him from the "rescue" : )

Oh, man! That is awful! I would rescure him from the rescue too! These places are supposed to be rescues and then they are just in it for the money. That just pisses me off, pardon my language!

Sadly this happens a d many choose to ignore it because the person(s) hide behind the rescue label. If it were a breeder they would be named shamed and left out to dry.....
I cant say do or dont take the pig but do remember we cant save them a. Once one goes its soon replaced. Report the rescue to the correct authorities and hopefully this will make them clean up their act.
We all take in and help pigs but we must stay within our means.
Best of luck and let us know what you decide to do.
