Just checking in as I wait for my elder guinea pig Larry to pass. Larry and his brother and sister were a surprise when I adopted Mabel in January of 1995. It soon became apparent that Mabel had not been removed from the cage soon enough and my baby gave birth to babies in June of 2005 ~ three identical babies I named Larry, Curly and Moe. Curly, a little girl, went to live with someone else, but Larry and Moe moved into the childcare center I direct and Mabel continued to live at home. Mabel and Moe passed away in within months of each other in early 2010. About an hour ago we realized Larry was probably in his last moments. In spite of being deaf and blind (perhaps since birth but not discovered until he no longer had his brother to follow around), Larry has led a happy life being brought bits of fruit and vegetables by 8 different classes of preschoolers who have passed through the doors since his arrival. He is lying quietly on hi side and his breathing has nearly stopped. He will be missed by his little friends.

Awwww that is so sad! So sorry for your loss! At least he lived a full and spoiled life! That's what I kept telling myself after my cat Tigger died! His footprints will be forever across my heart!

Much to my surprise Larry was still with us when I came in at 6:30 this morning. He moved a bit when I was near his cage, but had not really moved much overnight. At no time did he seem to be in pain or distress, for which I am grateful. I called a vet to have him put down, but before they called me back he finally passed. Thanks for your kind words. P.S. When I signed up I hit male by mistake and haven't been able to correct it, so just for the record, I am a female. )
