Post by Mama to Dizzee & Bean on Mar 6, 2013 1:26:39 GMT
For the last few days, Bean's right eye has been a bit cloudy, almost like he had a cataract. We had been keeping an eye on it because he seemed fine and neither of us knew that guinea pigs commonly got eye injuries. Today we took a closer look because the eyelids started to look inflamed. Matt found a piece of timothy hay sticking out of his eye! He quickly got it out (thank god for him cos I would've never seen it) and I used sterile saline to flush it out really well. He seems SO happy now and is popcorning around the cage and being very social, so it must be feeling better. But we made a vet appointment anyway. He goes in tomorrow to get checked out...wish us luck! Piggy prayers would be dearly appreciated! Mama's worried :

thanks After I wrote that post, he laid down in his pigloo and slept probably the deepest I've ever seen him sleep. He was totally relaxed with his little foot out. And now he's awake with Dizzee chasing each other and popcorning around the cage. Something tells me this little piggy is gonna be okay I have high hopes for tomorrow!

Hay seeds, hay pokes etc sometimes cause issues. But if found quickly enough can be sorted without vet intervention. Sounds like youve done a fab job.

He'll be okay, don't worry! Pigs get pokes in their eyes like that quite often. The cloudiness means it's healing. In a week you'll never know it happened

Aww thank you guys so much! He's doing so well this morning! I checked him out before heading off for work and the cloudiness has lessened and the tissue around his eye doesn't look as inflamed. We're still gonna get him checked out to make 100% sure we got all the owies out, but I have a good feeling he's gonna be just fine He was a very happy, social piggy this morning, so I think he feels optimistic too

Update!!! Just got back from the vet's office. She said that Dizzee is a perfectly healthy little boy (aside from being just 3 oz. overweight) and Bean was given oral and topical antibiotics. He has anterior uveitis with corneal inflammation. She thinks he'll respond well to the medicine, but she wants to see him back in another week to check on how he's doing. She said best case, he'll be just fine and be off the meds in a week. Worst case, he may lose vision in that eye. But we're gonna do everything we can to get our boy back to feeling better and even if, god forbid, he loses the vision....he's always gonna have a loving, happy home with us (and lucky him...he's got a big brother to show him around!) Everybody at the vet's office loved them both and took turns coming in to visit with them too They're gonna be wheeking to GO to the vet if we're not careful! haha

Piggy eyes are surprisingly resilient. He'll be just fine, don't worry!
How much does Dizzee weigh? I'm curious as to what your vet felt was overweight. I would normally go by the form of the pig than their actual weight as some pigs are naturally heavier than others.

Dizzee is 3lb,3oz. and Bean is 1lb,.5oz. He is a little pudgy, but he's most certainly not fat. Plus, he's getting a lot more exercise now that he's got Bean to run around and play with, so I don't think his weight will be an issue. I think I may also cut some of his portions on treats down too. We'll typically give him a baby carrot a few times a day as a treat, as well as celery, etc. Maybe we'll do half a carrot now, so he's still being treated and doesn't think he did wrong and is being punished, but he's also not becoming unhealthy I had a chat with him last night and explained that Dizzee and Mommy are going to start watching what we eat and this summer we'll both be in better shape. We'll do it together! haha
