I wouldn't house a guinea pig and a rat together. They have totally different dietary requirements and housing needs and, although it seems like you'd be giving the guinea pig companionship, rats are a different species so they can't really communicate. There is also a chance that the rat could attack and kill your piggy (or even vice versa), so it's a risk that I wouldn't take.
If you're worried about companionship for your piggy you could check out your local breeders and rescues for a friend, or else just be sure to give your piggy extra love and attention. Some pigs like being alone, so it's not the end of the world if they don't have a friend, provided you give them a lot of love.

Guinea pigs should be housed with guinea pigs and no other species. They shouldnt be housed with rabbits, and definately not any other species. For both the animals welfare its best to keep them seperate.
They could cause serious harm to eachother, have different dietry needs and cannot communicate to eachother, so although they may "look" to be keeping eachother company, they cannot communicate so its unfair.
An aquarium isnt a suitable home for a guinea pig either (not even sure its ok for rats) due to the lack of ventilation.
Guinea pigs can live alone and im sure he would much prefer to be alone than living with the rat. Give him plenty of attention and he will be fine.

We are looking into getting him a new cage. What type would you recommend?

Personally, I love c&c cages. If you have the space and they suit your household, they're a relatively inexpensive way to give your pig lots of space. This site has lots of great ideas of what you can do with it. You can adapt them to any shape or size you like.

We have looked up c&c cages and i like the way they look. I have also found a different type of cage called Midwestern and it looked very similar and it was cheaper then the c&c cage.
