Please note this was a problem about two months ago and all the hair has grown back now. Just after ideas in case it's likely to come back.
Our short haired cavy, Jerry, we noticed was getting thinning hair and scaley skin. At the same time the other two piggies, one in particular started fighting with him. He got a sore on his ear from a bite we think and became very scared wheras before he had been the bravest one. We assummed the boys had grown up a bit and Captain Fuzz was exerting his dominance.
We took Jerry out and over a few days he lost most of the hair on his body except his head, his skin was scaley and had a couple of sores on his back. My daughter searched the internet and thought maybe a fungal infection so we put on some soothing antifungal cream and bathed him every three days in an antifungal shampoo. He got better quite quickly though is probably not quite as plump and shiney as he used to be yet.
It is winter here and the weather is very damp though they are inside, it could be more humid than normal.
Could he have been picked on because he was sick. Or did he get sick because he was attacked?
We have stepped up our care with more lap time, weighing them etc to see if any hair loss starts again. Is it likely to come back? Should I provide any other 'medical' follow up for Jerry? He is not as brave as he used to be now living alone. We are hoping to get a baby boy from a rescue shelter next weekend to move in with him.
