Hello, I'm Nichole.
We have two male cavies, maxwell and pumpkin, that will turn two next month. They were not from the same litter but we got them at the same time at 3 months old. They squabble a bit but are so cute the way the find each other when separated...it's like listening to morse code. My boys (ages 6&8) adore them. We thought of separate cages at one point but they do not harm one another and only get upset when separated for too long. Even with cage cleaning time, they cry when one goes in the cage first and the other is alone, then they talk up a storm at their "new surroundings".
They are our only pets due to allergies to dogs (my boys) and cats (me). I know I am allergic to their hay but I wear a mask when changing their cage out and when adding new hay. I've been fine. We had the opportunity to have them outside and in our garage most of the summer. It is a finished garage and I spend most of my summer sitting in there reading while my boys play outside. When I go out to trim trees or hedges I bring them out too in the shade.
We noticed they were much more relaxed as they saw us more when out there. We kept them there even in the fall and they would be greeted with every coming and going. Alas our AC/heating unit broke that services the garage and we cannot replace it this year as it is just for the garage and we just had to replace 2 garage door openers and half the siding on our house right before this happened.
So we felt bringing them into the entry just off the garage would be the same for us and them. It was and they loved being there...the center of attention. It makes for a crowded entry but whatever floats their boat. I like that they are much more friendly with us now that they are in a very frequented area...and we enjoy hearing them all day.
I'm not sure I can add photos from my tablet. I so seldom use an actual computer anymore. Have not been a huge fan of photo bucket as I never quite figured it out.
Anyway I look forward to reading many many posts...as right now we are experiencing very cold weather and the guineas much more prefer running outdoors than indoors. Though we did discover that Max is a master of climbing stairs. Thank goodness my kids were home playing with them that day was cleaning the cage. In the past they just scurried along the walls of the entryway, hiding under the lip of the stairs (it's only a 1" lip LOL). I thought my 8yo was pulling my leg and just carried him up...but I have video footage now of him doing it. Now I block the stairs...as there is too much trouble up there for them while I clean and pumpkin sits at the bottom crying out but refusing to follow. He is not an adventurer by any means.
