Hello everyone,
My name is Nancy and I have begun to raise pet pigs after many years of being in Syrian Hamsters. I used to show GPs in 4H and at fairs when I was a teenager.
I raise Syrian Hamsters for pets since we have no Hamster association so have no way to show them. I have an Independent Pet Store which takes my Hamsters and they had a 4her supplying them with very nice Guinea Pigs but they aged out of 4H and have discovered the world of opposite sex and so decided to retire from the Guinea Pig raising. They have been working with me and my Hamsters for well over 5 years and asked me if I would consider raising pet pigs for them. At first I said no, but when a member of my Church asked me to help them find two Guinea Pigs for their 3 sons as a Christmas Present I talked them into waiting to get the piggies until after Christmas. I located a private breeder on Craigslist who had 3 young Boars for sale, but they insisted on all 3 going together. 2 boars were 6 weeks old, and one was 8 weeks old. My friend only had a cage big enough for two pigs so I was given the 3rd pig who is now 10 weeks old.
His name is Noah and he is a Black Red and White American Short Hair
When I took some Hamsters to the store they again asked me if I would consider raising GPs since I had to get Noah some pellets and hay you knew I had a GP.
I told them only if I can find a show breeder who is willing to help me with quality Sows would I consider raising GPs. I was guided to a breeder who specializes in Teddies but they recommended I start with the Americans cause they don't like to cross different coats together. Since I like all type coats ,but prefer coats which require less often grooming I didn't mind focusing on American SH for now. She offered me two lovely Sows a mother and Daughter.
Mom was inpig and due in just a short time but they were comfident she would adjust before birthing so I came home with
Poppy a Chocolate Tort American SH whose Tort markings are in need of major improvement, but she is a sweet heart very calm and quickly adjusts to new things and places.
Poppy when she came home with me.
Poppy's older Daughter is a better marked Chocolate Tort who is 16 weeks old. I got to name her too and she is Pigtunia
Pigtunia
I love her Tort stripe down her nose
and at 12:00PM I got the honors of watching the birth of two lovely new lives come into the world
a Golden Agouti, and red American SH boar
and a Black and red American SH Sow
I currently have Poppy's older daughter in with Noah but after reading some post feel both are too young to breed even though the breeder said she was old enough and should be allowed a litter before her pelvic bones harden up. Noah did try to mount Pigtunia when they were first introduced but she was very firm with him in not wanting anything to do with mating. Noah has quit trying, and both are happily enjoying each others company. I'd love to place Pigtunia back with Poppy but now she has pups not sure she will allow her daughter in with her. The cage is big enough for all but not sure how protective of the pups Poppy will be.
I will attempt to introduce the baby Boar to Noah when he is 4 weeks old in hopes I can have two happy Boars and two happy Sows. I also hope to get 2 more sows to complete my herd too.
