I have 3 14week old sister sows. All 3 have suddenly developed hard lumps, 2 have them behind their ear, the other has one on her side/shoulder and on her neck. These have come up suddenly as I obviously feed them heck them everyday. Why would all three get them at the same time? All active eating lots etc! Calling the vets tomorrow to get an appointment.

Since all 3 of them have lumps, I'd be concerned about "lumps" our lymphadenitis. That condition is caused by a strep bacteria and usually affects the lymph nodes causing swelling and abscessing. The bacteria causing it is contagious, so that would explain how all of them have it.
Otherwise, it might just be coincidental that they all have abscesses - from biting one another maybe. Or could be something genetic since they are littermates. It's hard to say without seeing them.
Do they share a cage with other pigs? Is there anything sharp in the cage that could be poking them? Any other symptoms at all?
Hope the trip to the vet goes well!

Yes I have another sow in with them and she is fine *touch wood* I thought maybe an infection but I guess we will have to see what vet says. They are all still lively it isn't affecting them at all. They are young so hopefully they pull through whatever it is :/

And no nothing sharp that I'm aware of. The fact that 2 of then have it in exactly the same place made me think it's a gland of some sort (I know nothing about this type of thing) almost like tonsillitis it affects your whole neck?! Hope I can get into the vets today

Been to the vets, he said it's likely to be due to the hot weather a bacteria has caused an absess. No antibiotics to be given due to one getting smaller over night and one if the lumps on one bug has gone. He said hopefully they will go, or burst and then I just have to keep them clean.
Hopefully they pull through .
Anyone have any tips on what to do now? Any good foods to fight bacteria etc?

Keep them clean and dry, perhaps up their vit c intake with veggies. Otherwise just watch and wait. iv never had pigs grow lumps due to heat though.
Are they soft?
If they are kept indoors i would remove all hideys too, hideys trap bacteria and moisture (humid areas are a haven for bacteria)

Will do Yes vet said it's unusual all 3 have the same, but was just a guess about the heat making bacteria higher etc. But they seem to be fighting it themselves. Only time will tell. If they get worse or don't go down in a week or so I will be straight back up the vets. I'm off to get some dandelions and will give them plenty of peppers, I heard before they are good for their immune system x

No seem quite hard, he said one looks as if it may burst, and one looks like it has already burst and scabbed over. The fact these appeared 'over night' scared the hell out if me. I feel terrible but I check them everyday and clean then out every other day and sit watching them everyday and I only noticed the lumps yesterday x

Do you have a picture of them, im curious to see what they look like?
If they are abscesses you dont want them to burst internally, this causes a whole heap of other issues.

Proboards have introduced a new limit on the amount of attachments a forum can have. And it's a tiny one. So in order to post a picture you'll have to first upload it to a site like Photobucket or Flickr or Imgur and then post the link here. I hope your piggies are okay!

Ooh I don't know how to use those sites. Was so easy to just add the pics as attachments! Anyways, one if the pigs lumps seems to have gotten slightly smaller. Has anyone else had more than one pig appear in lumps?? When I say lumps I'm not talking about a pimple, they are bit bigger than a marble I guess, x

One if the pigs lumps has almost gone, I struggled to know what side it was at first... one if the others lump is shrinking slowly daily, the other doesn't seem any different. I guess this is a good sign?! All 3 eating well and wheeking for food haha

A Lot of things I read and get told really scares me. This forums great. I know worst case scenario has to be discussed but this forum is practical x

I'm not sure. But obviously the lump has now gone and at least it's popped outwardly and not internally :/ I'm scared to squeeze it though!!

If the abscess has burst it's important to keep it very clean and open until all the infection/pus is out. Even if this means picking the scab off! My vet have us hibi scrub to flush an abscess out (diluted as it's quite strong) but aangs was a very large nasty abscess that took a while to heal. Just keep a close eye on them to make sure they are healing nicely.

Definitely keep it open and clean! If it closes before all the pus is out, it will only get worse. If she'll tolerate it, gently squeeze it from below the abscess moving towards the opening.

We have tried to squeeze it but it doesn't want to budge anymore. The day it popped it was a lot of puss, I got all I could out, today she must of scratched it as was bleeding but It just wouldn't squeeze out. Was flushing best I could with salt water.

Tonight I'll try and get a pic of what I mean. It just won't squeeze out, me and my husband have tried and it stays put. If anyone can help I'd be great full. I'm more than happy to go back to the vets, but obviously would rather sort myself without anti B's x

Keep cleaning it and if necessary pull the edges of the hole open to allow pus to drain and try every day to squeeze some out.
One of my boys had a huge abscess that the vet had to lance, and for a few days afterwards I couldn't get anything out of it, although I could clearly feel stuff inside. One day it all came out in a huge lump, which was gross but great for my piggy. Once that stuff was out the wound wouldn't stay open and healed up nicely.

That's good to know, there isn't really a lump any more. Is the best thing to use set water?
