Hello!!! I am new here, and I decided to get registered because I always have a few questions about my guinea pig, Bibbsy , I am a new owner, and I have had my baby for a little of a month now, or almost a month I love my cavie so much!!! She is the best ever, even though her moods are quite very difficult to understand but I am hoping that I will get some answers to my questions here . I hope I meet alot of cavie lovers and become good friends !!!! So, as my first question, already lol, my cavie has not been chewing on the wood pieces that I have been buying her, she chews on this plastic ( or I think they are plastic) cracker looking sticks that are for guinea pigs, and I purchase those at Petsmart, but she NEVER chews on the wood pieces I buy her, is that bad for a guinea pig to NOT chew on the wood pieces? I am afraid that she will over grow her teeth PLEASE HELP!!! Bibbsy and me will be awaiting and appreciating very much for your reply

Mine never really chew these things either but I always leave them a selection of stuff to chew if they feel like it, they have wood blocks, toilet roll tubes (split lengthways so they can't get stuck) and thicker cardboard tunnels from the petstore, they enjoy things of varying hardness/texture. That said as far as their teeth are concerned hay is the most important thing. As long as they have unlimited access to hay their teeth should be fine.

Thank you I was worrying because she wasent chewing on any of her wood pieces I bought her and she eats her hay but sometimes she eats it not so much, I was told to give her less pellets and more hay, but I dont know if I should just let her eat hay instead of pellets at times or I can feed her more hay and less pellets, what should I do?

Pellets are important but not as much as hay, free feed hay at all times, advice on pellets varies, some people free feed, I however give them one bowl a day (approx 30-40g I suppose) and don't worry if they run out. Mine often don't eat a huge amount of hay, I give them a good handful twice a day and they never run out. Ask lots of questions, everyone on here is very knowledgeable and you can trust what you read on here - the internet is full of misinformation so be careful on general searches, I always look either here, guinealynx, caveycages or jackiesguineapigs, you should find good answers to almost anything to do with pigs on those.

Good advice there from Naomi. Wood chews are more like treats or toys than anything else. If they get chewed that's fine, but if your pig isn't into them then that's fine too.
Hay should be available all the time as it forms about 80% of a pig's diet. So long as they're eating hay, your pigs teeth will look after themselves!
