Hi! I just about 4 hours ago got a new baby girl cavy from the pet store. I know she is scared, and have put a sheet over her cage, and put her in a room where kids will leave her alone while she adjusts, but since I got her home, she has been sitting and breathing very hard. Kind if like panting but her mouth is not open. She is fluffing up a bit, she is the short hair, smooth coat breed. It probably is the first time she's been alone, I put a warmed up soft fur bed in there she can warm up with. I don't remember any other of my cavies doing that for this long, but I did not get them as babies. Anything to watch out for, is she probably just terrified?

She's probably just frightened. Do you have any other pigs she could live with or live next door to so she doesn't feel so alone?

Terra was very scared when I brought him home. Try talking softly to her. If you could get her a friend it would probably be better because guinea pigs usually do better in pairs. If you do have to keep her alone give her lots of attention. With time and patience she will settle down.
