Today Treacle has started shaking her head quite frequently, I had a look in her ears and I think they look a bit dirty but it's hard to tell because they have brown patches on them. She isn't scratching them and apart from the head shaking they don't seem to be bothering her, do they sound just dirty or does this sound like mites? Can I clean them myself or should I take her to the vet? The next day I could get to the vet is Monday unless I book am emergency appt at the weekend.

It sounds like it could be ear mites. You can give her ears a little clean with some gentle wet wipes (I like the Water Wipes brand, but I don't know if they're available everywhere - otherwise try to get an unscented type) or with some cooled boiled water and some cotton wool. I've never experienced ear mites myself, but they're meant to make the ears look a bit brown and gunky inside. According to Guinea Lynx you can treat the mites with ivermectin, which is available in Pets at Home (looks like this) or cheaper from your vet. Those pipettes are easy to use. The dose is on the pack but it's normally half a pipette to the back of the neck and rub it in, and then repeat a week later. Very simple.

Thanks Orlaith, I've just given her ears a clean with a baby wipe so will keep an eye on her and see how she is, quite a lot of brown stuff did come out but apparently dark eared pigs do have dark wax so it's difficult to tell what it was I got out. I have checked her cagemate though and her ears are completely fine, surely if it was mites they would be contagious?

Well after a couple of days of ear cleaning (done the other two as well to be safe) all my pigs hate me but all seem comfortable. I've ordered some otodex ear drops to be on the safe side, it's recommended on Peter guerny's website and treats wax and mites so covers all bases!

Thanks orlaith, they all seem fine now, still waiting for the drops to arrive but think they'll be a useful addition to my piggy medicine box.

Yeah, it's no harm to have them on hand just in case.
