I just gave the pigs dinner and noticed that poppet is behaving strangely, she is keeping one eye mostly closed, when she does open it it looks bulging but not red or anything, she also appears to have a slight head tilt going on and perhaps a slight balance issue. I haven't caught her to have a proper look yet as I want her to finish eating first, she is eating which is good and doesn't seem to be avoiding the hard veg so I don't think it's her teeth. Any ideas what I can do to help her? I will be getting an appt with my vet tomorrow but is there anything I can do for her tonight?

Ok so I just caught her to get a closer look, she definitely had something stuck under her upper eyelid, I gave her eye a little washout and managed to get rid of it, her eyelids (upper and lower) both look a little inflamed but I guess they would?? Could that have been causing all those problems? Could the head tilt just be down to discomfort? Should I take her to the vet tomorrow or just keep an eye on her for 24 hrs before deciding??

I'd go ahead and schedule the appointment. In the mean time just keep an eye on her. It could have been discomfort, but without a vet there's no way to really know to what extent the eye was injured.

I've been keeping an eye on her all evening and she does seem much better, she seems brighter in herself again, her head tilt is gone, her eye is open and the actual eye looks bright and clear, the only issue still remaining is that her eyelids are still quite inflamed looking and dark pink in colour. I may still take her to the vet tomorrow to be safe but at least it seems it was nothing more serious, she had me very worried for a while there!

Ah, poor wee lady. It's amazing they don't end up with more hay pokes, etc. One of my girls actually ended up having surgery once because her lower eyelid got really bulgy and pink and when the vet cut away some of the excess skin there he found a grass seed lodged behind her eyeball! So you're very lucky you managed to clear her eye.
Now that the debris is gone from her eye she should be fine. She might have a little scrape on the eyeball that you can't see so no harm going to the vet if you feel more comfortable. Be aware that her eye might go a bit cloudy as it heals if there is a bit of damage, but it'll come right in no time. Her eyelids should be fine too, you know yourself when you get something in your eye that sometimes it hurts for a while even after you get it out.

Thanks orlaith, I've checked her this morning and her eye is indeed cloudy but her eyelids are perfectly normal. Does a cloudy eye suggest a vet trip is necessary or should she be ok? I don't mind taking her but I avoid it if I can as I have to get a taxi and the pigs find it very stressful.

She should be fine. If you like you can get brolene drops (for humans) from your pharmacist (just don't tell them it's for piggies) and put a drop in her eye two to three times a day for about a week. That should ensure no infection sets in. The injury will sort itself out - the fact that it's cloudy tells you it's already getting better EDIT: Alternatively an ointment like this one will also do the job. To apply an ointment to the eye it helps to have them standing in front of you. Then gently pull down on the lower eyelid so there's a little "pouch" and put a little line of ointment in there. Twice a day is enough for an ointment, or even once a day will do seeing as there's no actual infection there, it's more about prevention and also an ointment lubricates the eye and makes it more comfortable when there's a scratch present.

Ok so now Fudge is doing the exact same thing! Head tilt, swollen eyelids, closed eye etc I just had a look at her and can't see anything in her eye but gave it a little washout just in case. This may be crazy but could it have anything to do with the otodex ear drops? They're recommend by Peter Guerny but it seems odd that within a couple of days of using it 2 of my 3 pigs develop exactly the same symptoms?!

I had a look at Fudge this morning and could see they hay that was stuck but couldn't get it out so we've been off to the vet. They managed to remove the debris and have given her some eye drops for a few days to be safe. She seems much happier already and fingers crossed I'll have no more issues with them.

Poor lady. Glad she's feeling better now, though. Did you get a particularly dusty batch of hay? Or have you changed the position of the rack?

The hay racks were in the same place as usual, I've actually taken then out last night to see if that helps at all, maybe looking up into the hay was a problem? As far as can tell it's not dusty, both of them had a grass seed stuck so maybe there's just a lot of seeds as I'm getting closer to the bottom of the bag?

It could be. You could shake the hay into a black bag before you give it to them, just to get rid of any excess debris. Seeing as it's happened twice I'd say it's just the batch of hay and hopefully the next time will be fine.
