I'm taking my handsome Gibbs to the vet this evening. He's old (almost six and a half) and he's been getting quite slow over the last few months but I think it might be his time to go to sleep so I'm taking him to the vet for a second opinion.
He's already in a small cage but he only uses half of it - his legs are very stiff and he finds it tough to walk around. He gets impacted all the time and needs help to poop every day. His skin has started getting all scabby. And now he's gotten a little wheeze in his chest. He also had two seizures last week, although he came around very quickly.
One one hand he's always excited for his veggies and he eats plenty, but he doesn't seem to have any quality of life anymore. I feel like a horrible person, but every morning when I come out I have a little hope that he has run off to the bridge himself. It's not that I want him to die, but I'd rather he went in the comfort of his own home than having to get the vet to do it. So this evening the vet will give his opinion and I might be coming home without my little man.

Oh Orlaith I'm so sorry to hear this! What a horrible decision to have to make, my thoughts are with you and little Gibbsy x

Gibbsy came home!
The vet agreed that his time is getting close but he doesn't think he's ready to go just yet. He had a really bad seizure while he was there so the vet got to see it and see how he recovered. Even so, he's happy to treat him if we're happy to treat him. So he's on valium (second pig on valium in a few weeks!) for a few weeks to relax and that should keep the seizures at bay.
He was very tired when he got home last night and he slept a lot and now this morning he was out mooching around and looking for his breakfast! So hopefully he'll stay with me for the next few months.

Aww. I can understand your situation. With Gabe, I was so sad, but I was relieved that he didn't have to try to fight the URI anymore. And with Ruby, she had that horrible inner ear infection. We tried one medication, then a stronger one, but she kept getting worse. First, her head was tilting really bad, and then she couldn't walk and flopped like a fish out of water. I called my vet and said I was taking her to the shelter to euthanize her, and wanted to make sure she would do the same. It's a terrible situation. It helps to have a trusted vet that can give you an honest opinion. I hope he feels better and that you two enjoy your time together.

Gibbs has been on steroids and valium for a few days and he has PERKED. UP. Seriously, I haven't seen him this active in a long long time. He's chewing the bars trying to get into his neighbour, he's able to poop much better on his own, he's so much more alert than he was.
Yay!
He has even stopped trying to resist his medicine, it's nearly like he knows it's helping.

Gibbs is going downhill again. He's not as bad as he was but last night his eyes were very wet and his chest was quite bad. The only thing I'm hoping is that yesterday was the first really sunny day we had (the weather has been very cold and wet in Ireland this year, more than usual) and I had the windows open wide so it could have been a little bit of hayfever or some sort of allergy. He relaxes a lot when I pet him (but he doesn't like sitting on my lap) so I spend a lot of time over talking to him and rubbing his head. He stops crackling as much, so it's a good excuse to spend time with him.
