I took Terra to the vet this morning because he had not been drinking very much over the past few days. He has done this once before and he had a UTI them. Sure enough they found bacteria in his urine today and put him on an antibiotic Ive been syringe feeding him water as much as I can and feeding him wet lettuce and cucumber. He doesnt squeak when he pees and his urine is not bloody the only way I know is when he stops drinking. The vet says he probably stops drinking because it hurts to pee. your good thoughts and prayers are appreciated while my little boy is recovering.

Good luck, Terra! Some of my ladies seem prone to UTIs, I can't figure out why.
If you like you could give him some unsweetened cranberry juice to help change the acidity of his pee and clear the UTI. Just dilute 1:1 with water and put in a bottle on his cage (alongside regular water) and make sure to change it daily as it will go off. Kelkin is a good brand.

I have to get my daughter to take me to a health food store and get some. The stuff they sell at the grocery stores here have sugar and preseraitives in them. Ill get it as soon as I can. I have heard cranberry juice really helps.

The stuff they sell at the grocery stores here have sugar and preseraitives in them. Same here, it's very hard to get cranberry juice without sugar in it. Even the Kelkin brand I mentioned has a bit of sugar and preservative as it's the only one I could find the last time I needed it. I think Biona is meant to be just cranberry juice but it's quite expensive. Don't worry if you can't get it, it's not essential, but it's nice to give as a little boost. Plus some pigs really love the taste.

Terra went to the vet for admission this morning. He started sneezing and blood came pouring out his nose. I dont have much money in my vet fund so I may have to surrender him to the vet. Just hope its a small problem that wont cost to much to remedy I am going to be devastated if I have to give him up. I love him dearly hes like a baby to me. My main concern is for his life. The vet will give him all the necessery treatment even if I have to give him up. She truly loves animals.

We just got Terra back from the vet and he has a blood tinged nasal discharge . am to watch him closely. Please your good thoughts and prayers are very much needed. When he was at the vets he received a shot of baytril a vit C shot and fluids, He seems to be drinking more since he had the shot He has 2 infections at once. She says he has rhinitis. She gave him baytril for 2 weeks. I dont know where hes getting these infections from I keep him very clean. I dont understand it.

I think some piggies just get more infections more than others. I don't know why, but some of my pigs would get repetitive infections, and some didn't. I'm not sure if that's accurate, or if it is accurate, why. But I hope that helps.

Poor Terra. I hope you're okay - I know how much he means to you.
Some pigs just seem prone to picking up everything, no matter how clean they are they seem to manage to get little infections here and there. My own theory is that, like ourselves, piggies naturally have some bacterial living on their skin and inside them but normally the immune system stops the bad bacteria from getting out of line. But some piggies, like some people, don't seem to have a great immune system and they're more prone to getting sick because of it. Whether that's down to poor breeding or just the way things are, I couldn't tell you.
Fingers crossed for you both, I hope he picks up soon.

Just a quick update. Terra seems to be doing better. He is drinking water on his own and is not sneezing or having nosebleeds. The baytril really helped.

Sorry to say Terra is sick again. I am taking him back to the vet tomorrow. He did sound crackly over the past few days so I called the vet and she had me give him the leftover baytril until I could get to see her. He is not crackly anymore but is still losing weight. We will see what she says tomorrow.

I am probably going to be pigless after today. I just have 85 dollars in my vet fund and I think Terra is going to need a lot of care. I may have to surrender him and I'm devastated. I am sad because he has been my buddy for 3 1/2 yrs and he always gives me a reason to smile with his crazy little antics. hoping that the money I have will cover it. I'm going to try to work out a payment plan but I dont know if she will do that.

Poor Terra! I hope he comes around for you. He seems to pick up everything going, it must be so frustrating for you because I know you take such good care of him.
Would you consider talking to your vet about a payment plan now? That way if you need it in future you won't be in such a stressed out state. Obviously each vet is different, but I've been seeing my vet for a few years now and he doesn't mind if I can't pay all in one go so long as my piggies are looked after.

They dont have payment plans you either apply for care credit or give up your animal and Ive been turned down for care credit. You have to have perfect credit for care credit ive heard Its like a credit card for veterinary proceedures.

That's a shame, especially since guinea pigs are sometimes classed as exotics and can be more expensive. And it doesn't matter how much you manage to save, every once in a while you just don't have the money for the vet.
If you have to give your animal up, can you get them back by paying the balance?

I didnt expect for him to get so sick back to back like this. I put away money every week into a pet fund,so that when he gets sick I will have the money. Ive been up to the vets 6 times in two months and it exhausted my fund. I even spent some of the bill money on him and got in trouble with my husband for it. I am trying to save as fast as I can but I dont have much as I am paying my husband back.
