Hello, everyone! My name is Sharayah (pronounced sha-RAY-uh, but often mispronounced as sha-RYE-ah). I am a 26-year-old new guinea pig mommy. I have loved guinea pigs for years, as my cousin had two beautiful girls when we were growing up. I recently (almost three weeks ago now) visited the pet store to buy dog food for my six-year-old stinker of a Shih Tzu, Charlotte (Charlie for short) and found myself wandering through the small animal section, reminiscing about my own childhood pets, which were all dwarf hamsters. So there I was, smiling into a cage of tiny dwarfs when I noticed this handsome little guy staring up at me from a few cages away...and never in my life have I fallen in love with an animal so quickly! I named him Hershey because of the Hershey Kiss/chocolate chip on his face. He is the sweetest little thing, and he's already spoiled rotten!
Please note that, at the time, I had no knowledge of guinea pig rescues or sanctuaries. I would happily adopt (and probably will, someday!) a piggy now that I have become aware of their existence and have done some research.
I have also come to the realization that the cage I chose isn't quite large enough for him (it's a 40x21 rabbit cage), so as soon as I can gather the funds, I will be upgrading him to a C&C cage. I want him to have plenty of space to roam and play, and I feel just awful for not getting a C&C in the first place. But as I've had this one for three weeks, I'm not going to try returning it. I will probably just end up selling it myself or maybe just keeping it for cage cleaning days or an emergency of some sort.
I also feel guilty for not getting him a friend. He seems happy and not too lonely, but I just can't stand the thought of him being alone for the rest of his life. If I can talk the rest of the household into it, I will be looking into adopting another piggy ASAP!
